Watching the saffers here like

Im afraid to say but they are streets ahead of England right now, much more balanced side with more variation and dare I suggest but were it not for the fact they didnt play a test for 9 months would be ranked one.

They did outplay us in three tests out of 4 when we played them last

Certainly no shame in being a close runner up to the Saffers

How come they haven't won a series at home for 3 years?

Did you see the state of Ashwell Prince today; the bloke is absolutely dire, he wouldn't get into the majority of test match sides. The likes of him, Boucher, Rudolph and an ageing Kallis are nowhere near streets ahead of England.

The only player in that side who is indefinitely better than anything we have is Steyn.

Streets ahead? Not a chance. Better than us? Perhaps on their day but certainly not consistently.

Next summer will be close, but IMHO our strength in depth makes us a better team than them. Our batting line up has more runs in it than theirs, and although Steyn may be a better bowler than any of ours individually, for him to put their attack ahead of ours will require him to be on his game throughout the series, and against Australia (who SA definitely ARE streets ahead of) he really didn't do that.

Wouldn't mind AB in our middle order

Anyway, surely this series isn't an accurate reflection on South Africa's abilities as they're playing against an under prepared Sri Lanka on an English-style greentop.

If England were rolling over Sri Lanka in these conditions EB would be going mad.

Smith
De Villiers
Steyn

Cook
Trott
Pieterson
Prior
Anderson
Broad
Swann

+1 other (probably Bell).

Obviously Kallis in his prime would be in there, not sure now, probably still good enough as a batsman alone to be honest. Amla seems to do well against everyone expect England.

Embarrassing how one-sided this is.

Although it is to be expected when you play a sub-continent side on a greentop.

I am not sure how a seamer with 100 plus test wickets avg below 30 is not a shoe in

Morkel

Morkel

I wasn't sure between Bell, Amla and Kallis. Picked Bell on form in the last year or so. Then went for Broad instead of Morkel, mainly for his batting. Not sure there's much more than that up for debate TBH.

Not been any more impressed with what I've seen of him than Tremlett to be honest (good record but you can't go totally off stats)

you cant but I bet our seamers play on far more bowler friendly wickets than he does over say 10-15 games

Why would you pick Anderson when you have Steyn? Both swing it

If we're picking our best team why not pick a green wicket?

Maybe they do, maybe they don't, I don't know. Just saying he's never really impressed when I've seen him. Seems to have had a poor couple of games recently as well - 1-84 in a match in which Sri Lanka didn't score 350. Thought he'd had a poor series against Australia but he got 6 wickets in the first game, 2 in the second. Not great form and Philander's taking the new ball over him (although I believe Philander's more of a seam/swing bowler).

So should I not pick Smith an Cook as both are left handed openers?

I'd have Steyn and Anderson cos they are the best 2 seam bowlers imho.
