Been done to death I know, but absolutely no chance is Dom Bess the best spinner in the country. Nice lad yes, good attitude and a decent bat but with the ball he's poor.
Picked up a fortuitous five-fer but this is an ongoing thing with him, back to SA a year ago.
Leach isn't perfect but at least can give us a bit of control and bowled well in the second innings of the last Test

Bess on the other hand gets milked constantly, hit all over the park when he doesn't get it right, and can't land six balls within a metre of eachother.

Problem is I don't know where we go next - back to Crane? Parkinson?
I love Virdi and I think he'll take a lot of wickets for England, but he's nowhere near ready yet. Needs to work on control, and his batting and fielding are Monty-esque.

I know he's in last chance saloon, but Moeen has to play the first Test in India for me

Leach should be first choice going forward, he has done well so far I think. Bess has talent but agree needs to improve. Not sure Ali is the answer he was awful in India last time

Was watching a WeCricket video and they made an excellent point, what's the point of playing spinners if they aren't either going to give you control or a wicket-taking threat?. India won't be relying on their spinners so why not go with more seamers?.

Not even the best off spinner in our Xl now...

I used to play for a team called Belvedere. We had an offy called Harry who had some sort of learning disability and was absolutely rank. Like genuinely, my little sister has no interest in cricket and bowls better on the beach than he does in a game - the jokes have been sent around that even he is better than Bess

We're not going to win in India with spin. I'd only play Leach with Root in the India tests.

Moeen won't make any difference either.

Never been convinced by either Bess or Leach, my thoughts is they made the England squad on the back of Somerset producing big turning wickets over a few seasons.

Would be interesting to see Leach and Bess stats away from Taunton as opposed to it.

Would they be in the England squad if they played for a county who had not produced them turning wickets, not sure.

Like I said on another thread depending on the wickets in Australia and the depth we have in our bowling department pace wise, would be tempted in some games to play Archer, Wood, Broad and Anderson ahead of any spinner we have.

100%. Ashley Giles would be the CCs leading wicket taker on Ciderabads pitches man

Leach averages under 30 for England which is excellent albeit a short test career so far.

Leach won't rip through a side, but he won't let you down and will allow control while occasionally chipping away. He's not awful for now

Well yes, he has never been awful, just see him as a bit of a steady Eddie!

Don’t think Kohli and co will be too concerned about him put in that way

Leach averages less at home than he does away in tests

very harsh, he has bowled in 4 first games in 18 months

Peopel are far too harsh like.

Bess was excelle in South Africa, a big reason we won that series, and is bowling on the job

people migth have some points in this thread, but there has been absolutely zero sympathy for the fact than they've hardly bowled, shouldnt be judged by normal standards.

As long as he’s accurate I don’t mind, now and again the pitches will be a bunsen in India and he will get wickets. When the Aussies toured there a few years ago they had some spinner I’d never heard of (forgotten his name now) and he ended up winning them a test with ridiculous figures.

Leach and Bess both had 5 wicket hauls last match, I think people are overreacting

Bess not been great this series, and Leach is a better bowler, I just think in general all the players deserve more leeway than usual, they had 1 day warm up, against themselves, in 6 montgs

Well yeah, but my point is not based of this game or even this series, just my opinion of them both as bowlers.

Bess hardly selected for his county in away games, farmed out on loan, it’s not a glowing report, and I personally think South Africa had a terrible batting side in that series.

Leach is obviously better hence Somerset selecting him over Bess, and has done ok, just doesn’t get your pluses racing.

This is my general opinion of them both before this series.

Well yeah Leach has to play in India, I agree totally no other options really.

I do think it’s stretch to quote Bess figures in the first innings of the first test as evidence as even Sri Lanka themselves said that was the worst batting display in a long time, some of the balls Bess got wickets in the first test with just doesn’t happen normally.
