Our loveable traveller friends at Appleby this year.

I'd not go anywhere near Appleby no. But travelled nearby a couple of weeks ago and they were starting to arrive. Parked up along roadsides near Kirby Stephen. Mostly ones with the traditional wagons. And some of their horses were stunning. Probably proper ones and the scummier ones arrive later.

Heard some places shut up shop and go on holiday for the time the gypos are there so they dont get their stock robbed or bars trashed. A mate of the wife used to have a massive static caravan down there about a mile outside Appleby but sold up recently.

Imagine that lot turning up when you look out of your window and realise peace has ended for a while. Athough you would know anyway if you lived there.

Was over the Lakes last weekend coming away over the 66 they were starting to gather on the verges down the side roads.
It must be a nightmare for the villages around there.

What do the proper ones as you call them actually do to fund their lifestyles?

I met a bloke years ago who had a shop there , he put a barrier up at his door , no one including locals were allowed in at all , if anyone wanted anything they paid in cash before he would hand it over.

He got the usual bollocks about discrimination shouted at him , but he stood his ground and rightly so.

Used to go past regularly and it was a nightmare, couldn't get parked, the places I worked in got robbed blind, horses shitting all over. Must be awful living down there while it's on, unless you are a gypsy.

Surprised they didn't trash his place, they have form

Traveled along the A66 last week and you could see them in various fields.

I'd rather walk barefooted through a field of lego and upturned plugs than be anywhere near Appleby this weekend.

Is it wrong that I'm giggling like a lass at the title of that Viz strip

We have friends who live there and decide to go on holiday for a couple of weeks while its on.
They have an endless list of damage done over the years to the property.
Garden fence nicked and used for firewood, garden ornaments taken that sort of thing.
One year they were having a BBQ and a van load of them rolled up in the back lane. within minutes rocks and bottles were being chucked over the fence.
One of their grandkids was hit with something they had chucked over.
Theyve told me its now better to head away for 2 weeks and deal with it when they get back.
