O'Nien

I love him. Has he cost us a game in the prem? People say oh the city red (3-0 down) oh the Leeds headlock (wasn't given) oh the mags pass (we won). Is he good enough to start every game? No of course not but he is a valuable squad player to us and important for the dressing room.

I could pick out games where Reinildo has made awful mistakes. Brentford pen, Villa red off the top of my head. You could do it for a lot of players, Lee Fee gifted a goal to someone I can't remember who.

Point is he's stepped up from league one and done the job without costing us any points.
It’s funny how it’s only the mistakes of the local lads (like Neil last season) or the long serving players (like Hume and 09) that get highlighted on here.
As well as the ones you mention, I can think of a few that have been made by Xhaka - they seem to go under the radar

Ànd the game was well and truly over ..

You itk marra -Hope you are not ?
No not itk mate but Nordi,BDB,Alderete,Reinaldo. Then Hume and 09 both able in lots of positions. If we sell any of the first 4 Ive mentioned and replace them with Gerty we are weaker. Also cannot see gerty being happy as a bit part player, aswell as us spending a chunk of dosh on a non starter.

Why not? As we consolidate ourselves in the PL, then £20m is the going rate for a PL level squad player.

We should 100% be spending the money to sign him, if he is willing to stay.

Its possible mate ,but we dont know how much we have to spend if its bottomless funds great but we need to add 15/20 goals to this squad and it wont be cheap.Either way its gonna be exciting summer

Ideal situation for the club and probably 09 ,is for him to start on his coaching badges stay around first team squad and play as mentor in the U21's as an over age player . Would be able to do the job of Xhaka in that young squad and would keep him game fit for if an when required in first team match day squad.

How is it ideal for Onien, who is in his prime to be playing u21 football?

I’m really interested in this one like

Keeps him fit ,helps him with his coaching aspirations . Makes him more valuable to the club ,rather than letting him go ,as some are suggesting .

Tbh he is at the point of his career where he probably wants more game time.

Unfortunately he’s not good enough to start every week for us now.

Why not loan him out to Championship teams for the remainder of his contract, so he can play, they pay his wages and when he decides to call it a day he is given a coaching role at the club.

Bon de douche, everyone’s a winner.

This. The club won’t spend over £20m on a squad player and there’s no way Gerty signs knowing he’s now going to be a starter.
He’s capable (more than) of being a starter.

He was excellent at RB last time out. Whether he starts there on Sunday or not will give us an excellent indication of whether he’s staying or leaving in the summer.

If he’s good enough to interest Liverpool, he’s good enough for us.

He can play right across the back and in midfield. Hume getting in before him baffles me tbh.

He’s a good player.

Should be above Hume in the line-ups.
Personally, I think he’s a better footballer than Hume and I agree.

I don’t doubt Hume’s excellent character and development. Ideally, and if we were to have 50+ games a season rather 38 plus a dismissive attitude towards domestic cups, we’d need both to be pushing each other for that position.

Character is important and there’s no doubt Hume is leader there, but I agree that I’m not sure the right balance has been struck.

I hope Gerty starts on Sunday with a message to Trai of ‘beat that’ the next time you get your chance.

Every starter should feel some pressure - that’s the basis of excellent performance.

I agree, it’s a squad game these days. Especially with next season being in Europe. 🙄🙄🙄

Think he's got a lot more to give than he's given credit for tbh. Yes I agree there's better players but I'd definitely keep him around. Has a massive influence off the pitch and great with the young ones as well. He's got the right attitude that if not being selected he wouldn't cause problems and would probably see it as a challenge.

The problem is though, most footballers in their declining years want to play, not sit on the bench.

But he's fit now and shown he can play so don't see that as an issue. Newcastle error has happened and is behind him now, he's not going to do that against anyone else again, that was the biggest game of his life.

Everton, Leeds, Newcastle except 1 slip, he was brilliant.
