Don't forget Hoddle, Brooking and McDermott as well. In a rigid 4-4-2 there was plenty competition for one of the 2 CM places in the early 80's. Hard to believe that in May 82 Villa beat Bayern in the European Cup Final. Only Withe went to Espana 82 with England while half the Bayern team finished as runners up.
Didn't he spend a few seasons, including a leg break, with Bari before returning to Villa? Earning a recall to the England squad prior to Italia 90 but not making that squad either?
Terrible disease and such a wonderful footballer.

It was only a couple of seasons between 85 and 87 iirc.
