Ollie Pope

How is this bloke bullet proof in the Test team?
I don't think he is but he's still our second highest run scorer under McCullum and Stokes.

Defs should have came in with a different mindset today.

His plan was clearly coming from the wrong place, I didn't score last game so cos I'm captain I'm going to come out and be aggressive from the off.

Averages over 40 at no.3,which isn't where he should be batting at any rate. When was the last time we had that (barring Root)?

41.53 including his Ireland knock and 37.23 without it

For balance Duckett(after his daft shot there to get out)

Under McCullum he averages 44.47 with his Ireland knock and 40.54 without it

Not that there runs against Ireland don't count, but it's both batsman highest scores at 205 and 182.

So does boost the averages when perhaps not a true test of their abilities.

He will obviously play next week but if he has yet another failure I think it’s time his place in the team comes under serious scrutiny.

He’s nearly 27 now and has played in bags of Test matches. For whatever reason it seems likely he isn’t going to fulfil his potential.

Time to start looking for a proper number 3.

I'm not going to lose any sleep if Pope was replaced, nor should he be VC and be guaranteed his place in the side.

But he's the best for the job he's been asked to do. Which is bat out of position at 3, in a position we've long struggled to find someone top class there.

Trott the best there in my time watching cricket. He averaged 45 there and Pope averages 42.

There is nobody in county cricket that would step up at bat number 3 at test level at this moment in time

Bohannon has the weight of runs behind him but is akin to Westley, Vince, Stoneman, Denly etc all good county players but not quite made to play test match cricket to a decent standard.

There really going to have to take a punt on someone, which why would they take a punt when the guy in the position averages an absolutely fine number batting 3.

Stokes has been our worst batsman since McCullum took over, especially away from home where he averages a mere 24.

He’s still averaging over 40 at 3. Not many people in my lifetime have done that. Trott. That may be it..

He’s very scratchy to start with, and can be feast or famine (but that’s going to happen with Bazball anyway, we’ve seen the same with Crawley)

Tell you what i’ll bet there’s not many who would’ve guessed that the “best number three in the last 35 years with a minimum of 10 matches” list would be topped by Gary Ballance.
