It was for putting hand sanitiser on the ball. Didnt they do this a lot when wiping the ball throughout the summer test matches?
We had to wipe the ball with a disinfectant wipe every six overs at club level. And sanitise hands.

I find it difficult to consider a 37 year old cricketer to be naïve about putting something on the ball. I'm not saying he's deliberately trying to cheat but you know to make sure you know exactly what you can and can't do.
