Offer come in for the club (rumours thread)

Believe it or not but I actually met John Reece about 5 years ago, around the time we were plummeting under Short. A few of us were jokingly trying to persuade him to buy the club but he just laughed it off. He is from Sunderland but didn't strike me as a big football fan. However, he was at Wembley and the stuff about him flying his old school mates in his private jet etc is true, so maybe those lads have been in his ear.

If I had to bet though I'd say someone found out there is a Sunderland-born billionaire who was at Wembley and has put two and two together and come up with five.
Might well not be interested but generally there’s got to be people around who could be persuaded to invest.

When KLD was walking round Trafalgar Square last Friday evening he must have been thinking “Christ, imagine if we gave these fans a semblance of success!”…..

I was sent to a private school. Some of the lads were thick as, it’s just their parents had money. Not saying I wasn’t dim either, I was. Having cash isn’t an indication of intelligence!!
The cleverest lad I ever knew went to the local comp I spent my last two years at. Ended up as a forensic scientist in the Cayman Islands for a while. Back living in the house he grew up in back in Belmont now. No idea what he’s doing but I suspect it’s something clever.

It never was. The majority back then weren't academically selective. The direct grant schools definitely were - 600 boys for 120 places the year I sat the exams. And the 11 plus was a doddle in comparison.

When I was there the RGS wasn't private. It was something called a direct grant grammar school. Basically, it charged fees, but what the parent paid was means tested, with the government making up the difference. So admission was based on an entrance exam and interview only. They were abolished in 1974 by the incoming Labour government, which gave the choice of the schools entering the state system (and becoming comprehensive, unless they were in an area retaining grammar schools) or going private. Nearly all went private.

I think during most of my time there, my parents only had to fork out for lunches and uniforms.
Exactly the same as my uncle. I think it’s a big mistake by Labour to this day.

Why? He can’t be that bad a bloke as he is still in contact with many of his old school mates and flies them and their spouses onto his yacht in his private jet. Self made billionaire, no silver spoon…

Have no firm knowledge of any interest in SAFC but it would tally in as much he’s from Sunderland and proud of his education and roots in the City. Many of his old school marras are huge SAFC fans too and will have asked the question over the years….
I reckon someone might’ve hacked his wiki page then

My parents understandably thought they were doing the right thing by sending me there. Maybe things might’ve been different if I had to sit a competitive exam to get in, but all that school primarily cared about was money.
I don’t have many regrets in life but not putting in the effort at school is one of them.

I had a similar experience when I was 10. (1954). I earned a scholarship to Merchant Taylors in Crosby, Liverpool. Wish I hadn't. Brutality from more senior students and house masters,
I hated it but it was useful later in life.

Think he was talking about Ratcliffe.

Thankfully, by 13 years later, the RGS had a pretty liberal headmaster. The levels of corporal punishment were way lower than at my state primary school. Prefects were more inventive than brutal - having to copy out an auction list from the Times was way worse than lines.

Was he there ?

Honest question

They would have to finance a Championship club rather than a League One club and they have little to none money. That's the difference. SD is legally bound to match pro rata whatever KLD invests. Someone correct me if i'm wrong.

I thought that too.

But not sure if there was some kind of cap on amount that he would have too find.

Someone’s just seen him at the game and ran with the rumour on that

I had no idea we had a billionaire MLF mind.

Did anyone know him?

My housemaster beat us with a riding whip in his study to an extent that he tore my pyjamas. Parents never asked why at end of term.
