Obesity discrimination

Discussion in 'SMB' started by RestlessNatives, Oct 11, 2018.

  1. Article about it on BBC Breakfast calling for it to be outlawed.
    Do you think it exists?
Do you think it is ever justified?
If it was subject to the same laws as race, sex and age, would it be sending the wrong message?

I remember someone who was morbidly obese who was made to sit on a different bank of desks to her team as she had body odour issues. This was obviously bad management as they weren't tackling the issue but I wonder if it would be more tricky to have that conversation if there were discrimination laws.

Other races, being gay and gender equality needs to be normalised.

Being fat doesn't and should be pushed as being very bad for your health. But no one should be a twat to anyone.

It depends on how you are being discriminated against.

Is it discrimination if you are so big you need to buy two seats on a plane?

Apparentley obese jobseekers lose out in selection decisions due to the possibility of them being more likely to have health issues thus taking more time off 'sick' thus being less reliable.

If you can justifiably claim that you’re weight amounts to a disability or is one of the outcomes of a disability then it is already covered in the Equalities Act.

No doubt weight will eventually become a protected characteristic

Even though for most it's a choice to be overweight

  10. Used to work in a small team that was split between several buildings on the same site. We often had to carry boxes of equipment between the buildings depending on where we were working. One person was morbidly obese and refused to carry anything as they claimed carrying stuff made their chest feel tight due to their size. That got people's backs up as they felt that person was just being lazy. One of the team fell pregnant but was able to carry stuff right up until she left for maternity leave. People were happy to carry the load for her out of courtesy, even though she didn't need help. Just thought it was interesting how the two people were treated differently.

And obviously they have no will power - mental strength, and are too lazy to shop / cook / look after themselves properly.

That, or they just couldn’t give two fucks what anyone thinks about them, and like being fat, or their partner likes them being fat.

Pretty easy to change with a few simple lifestyle choices though. You could even make a positive out of the negative in job interviews when you eventually knock a few clem off and get a few.

Saw a two-ton-Tess in front of me in Tesco the other day, trolley absolutely filled to the brim with utter shite from the frozen food and cake aisle. Struck me that the only fresh fruit/veg she hoyed on the conveyor belt was half a dozen bananas.

Lots of people are fat cos they are lazy (yes i know some its medical related). You arent going to employ someone who is lazy. How do you know if its laziness or medical? So you just dont take the chance.

Also im being discriminated against on flights with my weight & baggage allowance being less combined than some fatties. I want more baggage allowance cos im light.

Although this is simplified, it's piss easy to lose weight if you're fat as fuck for the vast majority. It's jut laziness.

There’s no excuse for being a little bit fat either.

They're on BBC talking about it now. One of the guests is obese and is saying that rather than step on the scales or discuss her weight she wants to focus on her health. Madness when it's fact being overweight links to cancer & diabetes.

It's ultimately a personal choice so each to their own, we could turn the argument here to drink and drugs. It doesn't mean when we do talk about obesity that it should be promoted as a healthy lifestyle.
  20. Lad I worked with would keep the biguns hanging about a bit then would say with sly look and a little smile...sorry about your wait.
