Start to dwindle. Yeah and P Coltrane got a bit lippy when I asked him what crowds would be if same happened as happened to us. Mid 30000 with odd 46k....nah

This is our club. Newcastle United. This version is a shadow of what it should be, it does not strive to be the best it can be. It settles for the absolute bare minimum and its only ambition is to stay in the Premier League, and nothing more. That is a perilous state because if it goes wrong the consequences can be devastating – relegation. Despite a much-improved performance against Spurs on Sunday and a much-needed point, Newcastle United should not be in a position where we are relying on Fulham being worse than us in order to stay in the Premier League.
We are a few weeks short of 14 years since Mike Ashley bought our club. Next year, 2022, brings the 130th anniversary of our great club. The 129 years so far have brought success and failure, it is important that we do not forget our proud heritage and history. League Champions four times, the FA Cup wins in 1910, 1924 and 1932 and then post-war period, back into the top flight, close to the title again but cup success as we lifted the FA Cup in 51, 52 and 55. The stagnation that followed in the late ’70s and the late ’80s is proof of the ups and downs but also evidence that if any football club can bounce back, it’s Newcastle United as we did in the ’90s and 2000’s – flawed at times but an ambition to get better every day.

Today there is no ambition at Newcastle United.

As Newcastle fans we are often portrayed as being demanding, we aren’t: What I want is a football club that tries. Having a football club that tries is very different from demanding we have a football team that wins every week. Most of us want a club that tries to be the best version of itself. I want to believe in our football club again.

Relegation remains a real possibility this season, and it would be catastrophic – there is no guarantee we will bounce back at the first attempt this time. And if that happens then what next? Do we get stuck in the Championship? Do we fall like Sunderland? Stay down for nearly 20 years like Leeds? The future of our club is on the line. We should never be in this position, full stop.

Over the last few years, the Trust has been working on an exciting new project that we believe is the most ambitious fan-led project in English football history – it is something to believe in and get behind.

We will never tell any supporter what they should be doing. But we make no apologies for inviting you all to play your part in the future of our great club.

We will be launching this project later this week, and as members of the Trust you will be the first to know – so please do check your emails on Thursday morning!

Popcorn ready for tomorrow.......

Yeah, I mean I can't be on trial for the words of others.

I don't blame you guys for departing tbh. And I wouldn't blame you if you all rushed back next season.
Tbf, we averaged 30k two seasons on the trot in league 1. I dont think its about us departing more an incredible number staying and showing loyalty that you lot probably wouldn't show if you went through the same.

You're not wrong, but it's still a third empty. I know most teams would kill for 30k in the Champ nevermind League One.

The use of 'to its knees' is a very emotional turn of phrase, but in pure business terms, you can't say Ashley's tenure has been a success.

In "pure business terms" it's been an astounding success over the years.

He has made some big money on transfers.
The club turns a profit
He's had advertising for his other businesses.

Businessmen don't rush to sell businesses that make money. Ashley has no sentimental connection to NUFC. He was in no rush to sell unless he could get his price....

I suspect he wants to sell now, purely because there is a glimmer of hope that he might get his price from Saudi, and because Covid has hit profitability as it has in almost every business. Even Man City have posted a huge loss this year.

Clubs won't have big money to blow on players this year to boost his coffers. He won't want to pay off Bruce and lose money on that. I think he wants out now... and the chasing of the Saudi deal is panic stations.

If I was a Newcastle fan I would be very worried

Why you mentioning the Saudi deal? It’s dead. Done. Let it go.

‘bit it’s still a third empty’. You say that like it’s a bad thing, the majority if not all of Premier clubs could only dream of having only a third of their stadiums empty if they suddenly dropped and spent 3 of the last 4 years in League One.

Most would be very lucky to fill half of their stadiums due to the crap being served up, though to be fair, the fans of some clubs would be staying away in protest rather than simply giving up.

It might be. But I can understand why Ashley would be desperate for it to be back on and why he is pushing for arbitration. He either thinks that there's something in the contract forcing the sale if it's approved.... (good luck with making that happen with a Saudi prince).

Newcastle (like most clubs) won't be worth anything near as much as they were a year ago.

Amnesty international were recently let down by Biden but most realise he had too much to lose. That doesn't mean Saudi are forgiven by USA and their allies. Just means they will be tolerated for financial gain.

I reckon its a circle of a few people on social media (journalists included) all just telling each other "what they've heard" and the likelihood is there's little truth in any of it. The story is pretty much feeding itself now.

Long may it continue obviously.

The endless f***ing threads day after day from the Chron are utterly tiring. They need to get a grip.

Again, it's not a criticism. What I'm saying is, when a third of your stadium is empty it's clear that a good portion of fans have walked away. It's not like you've rarely touched upwards of 40k. The appetite/audience is there.
I'd be disappointed in my dad if I was

It's a joke like I even know most mags as I'm a Geordie all think the Chronicle is a joke too..

Proper click bait
Sadly way the industry is going. Gotta churn out content content content to get the ad revenue to keep it all going. There's no time to produce a paper and an online edition both unique as each other. If you only do one no one will read your website or they'll just wait until it goes up there.

They're not daft. I reckon takeover stories and over optimistic headlines about them must get more clicks than anything else, and clicks make money! They're still linking to positive stories from April last year at the bottom of current articles ffs!

The club could be sold to the Khashoggi family and the Chronic would claim that they were just middlemen for the Saudis if they thought the story would get clicks.
