I think that works both ways depending on the set up and quality of teams we play against.

I agree in some parts that we definitely stifle the opposition but generally it's us that look and play poorly whilst the opposition fans are treated to entertaining football to a certain degree.

I think we've rode our luck on far too many occasions.
However, I hope I'm now seeing that change and in regularity from now on, with a better balanced set up and performance.

Well that's probably been the case when you were watching. They certainly are second best more frequently than not looking at the wind loss ration.

For total record though, by using the score as the meausure of who is the better side, Newcastle are better than their opponents about ten times a season.

Yep, I think the strategy works sometimes but not always. By stifling the opposition they frequently the contest into a low scoring one where 1-2 goals is all that are likely in the game, and a low scoring side can prevail. This suits Newcastle better than a shoot out.

Often they are still looking the poorer side but thanks to consistently outstanding goalkeeping the result defies xg.

The shift to four and pressing indicates that at least in some games, a different strategy will be used.

And it was a system they adapted last week one week before Jones' one and only 2 hour training session which you were suggesting made all the difference.

It's never that black and white. In the same way you can't say it's all down to Bruce you can't say it's nothing to do with him.

That's why I don't subscribe to the Bournemouth comparison. That Bournemouth side was f***ing woeful and destined for relegation. This was an Everton team that's being discussed about as a potential top four with a lot of good players. Whether you love or hate Bruce, it's a very good result for him.

My opinion, personally - Bruce has a good record of managing players and relationships. Was similar here. I think he gave them confidence when he arrived, but over time that doesn't make up for structure and strategy. Jones has probably come in with a clear and simple plan and the two have meshed well together for one result.

I don't actually think Jones would have been a terrible shout to replace Parkinson. For as much as you didn't seem to rate his work at Luton, I read a piece suggesting the tide was turning when COVID stopped the league stopped (lost one of his last six) and that it was more down to a lack of quality players (relative to the league).

You mightn't subscribe to the Bournemouth view but they did the same against Sheffield United beating them 3-0 out f nowhere when Sheffield were having a great run.

My view is a bit different. Bruce is a poor manager at this level certainly as the game has developed but it doesn't mean he is incapable of getting a performance out of some decent players. They played well second half last week and took it into the game yesterday against a team that were below par and perhaps taken surprise by Newcastle's performance from the off. It was a perfect storm of Newcastle playing well and Everton having an off day. Jones had zero contribution to it though. Hes only taken the players for one session.

It sounds to me like actually we largely agree.

I've just not seen anything from Bruce - at Villa or now - that suggests he's a details man. I don't disagree there were certain flickers of similarity against Leeds, but they've been pressing at times as far back as the first Leeds game.

What felt different yesterday is that it looked like a conscious effort to go as a team. Same with Wilson and Fraser pulling wide. If we subscribe to your view, why not press together sooner? Bruce might be a victim of optics here, but it's certainly unfortunate for him, and especially his coaches, that a new guy comes in with a “hands on approach” according to the Athletic and it suddenly clicks.

Its pointless. there are one or two mags on here that can hold a coherent argument and they can do so without pretending they aren't mags. Cant see the point. Who's he trying to kid?
