The way councillors, MPs, at least one mayor, local government, and national government, campaign groups etcetc all just folded and abandoned all principles in the face of the takeover had been eye opening.

If the new owners retain that level of support from fans then they are in a very strong position to get whatever they demand, whatever the fabled “investment in the region” may or may not consist of.

Local media and politicians seem to take it as read that letting some medieval, murderous despots have free reign to do practically what they want in the region can only be a good thing. I’m far from convinced myself.

People should look into how Manchester City Council have been corrupted by the UAE. Early signs indicate it could be far, far worse in this part of the world.

Although of course if the mags get to watch James Tarkowski every week it will all be worth it.

Exactly mate. I’ve not heard one dissenting voice from the council, local MPs, or anyone in a position of influence. Just the opposite in fact. We’ll see how it all pans out if they stick around long enough. It should be mentioned that Ratsville has a large student population that aren’t from the city and can be quite vocal on human rights and other issues. Interesting times ahead.

What if they deliver a couple of decent seasons, whats the situation with this stuff going to be like then? How closely will the world associate Newcastle (and possibly, unfortunately, the north east to some extent) with Bin Salman?

MbS is the closest modern equivalent to Saddam Hussein. If and when he does something that revolts the world, where will that put the mags? I will predict that, along with Saudi Arabia, Newcastle and the surrounding areas will be the only places in the world where significant numbers defend him.

In terms of the region’s image, I don’t think Saudi investment is very healthy at all tbh, I think it’s more likely to be the worst thing that’s ever happened.

Would have been nice to see at least one politician from somewhere speak out, but it wasn’t to be unfortunately.
