NUFC/Sportwashing

You may be right but these people haven’t paid £300 million to finish mid table in the premier league.
No they haven't. They've paid £300M to be an accepted part of elite sports in the UK, thus cleansing their reputation. Sports whitewash in action. PIF is an investment vehicle looking to generate internal rates of return and future economic benefits, spending a billion to compete with Man City won't give them a club worth £1.3B and probably won't deliver a PL title either. Strategy is probably modest investment over a couple of years and try to flip for a profit. The major aim of sportswash is achieved on day one though.

BBC - Newcastle takeover: Saudi Arabian-backed deal is close

I'm not sure FFP has much clout to be honest Hank. It's been slaps on the wrist mainly for clubs so far. And it still allows for mega spending. Wage caps would be a way forward.

Certainly needed in the Championship. Given that any likely PL cap will probably be around 60-65% of income, most of the big 6 are already inside it.

They will have so much money given the current oil prices.

The worlds richest club.

Got to give credit to Mike Ashley too.

I reckon they could win a title before the close of the decade!

I understand the focus on the murder of a journalist, but in my mind it barely even scratches the surface when it comes to the sheer evil of the Saudi royals.

Hilary Clinton believed that they were funding ISIS in Syria.

15 of the 19 September 11 hijackers were Saudi. The 9/11 victims families believe that there is evidence that the hijackers received help from figures within the Saudi government (ie the Royal family) and are bringing a legal case on that basis. The head of Saudi intelligence was Prince Turki, and he resigned from his post 5 days before 9/11, after more than 20 years in the post.

Prince Turki's son is the Saudi Sports minister. The Chronicle approvingly reported the fact that he started following the mags on instagram last year. It seems not improbable that he'll appear at a match at some point. Maybe even make a brief appearance on the pitch for a smattering of applause?

Prince Turki was the man who did more than anyone else to establish the Taliban in Afghanistan. He met Bin Laden several times. He admitted to torturing British citizens in Saudi but faced no consequences.

How utterly depraved do you have to be to welcome people like this into your football club?

They execute people for crimes committed when they were children. They have killed thousands and deplaced millions in Yemen. The have funded the spread of Wahabbism that encourages deadly Islamic extremism all over the world. Yet when a murdered journalist's finance pleaded with mag supporters to oppose the takeover, she was met with a volley of abuse from a substantial number of them.

I never used to like calling them 'the scum', but there's no longer any reason to hesitate there. It is an accurate description of what they are - they are scum.

The amusing thing is that the few plans that have been leaked suggested Staveley's consortium were going to be bidding for players like Demari Gray, Hamza Choudhury, and Callum Wilson. They are going to be shopping in the same market they were before, except they will now be overseen by a group of repulsive individuals with no experience of running a football club. This will be at a cost of becoming the most loathed club in the world, and with good reason. I don't think I'd be celebrating if I were them.
Excellent post. They may ‘win’ or buy trophies, they may not. Hopefully in today’s world where many of the top players genuinely take an interest in human rights, they’ll be seen as a pariah club - how ironic if they become boycoutted by the worlds elite!

It’s incredible that any genuine, educated supporter of any football club would want this for the team or city
