The exact same phrase he used when here.

It's almost like it's never his fault
Me and #2 son were waiting for his excuses when we watched motd. Brucie basically admitted that Man City were better (Fairy nuff) but then said that he wasn’t making excuses, then he gave some excuses.
.. Gona get pelters, but I thought he did a cany job here until it went sour .. And while it was right to get rid of him when we did, I do think he was a little unluckily with the way our best forwards pissed off ..
He started off ok then one transfer window ruined the team. Vaughan, Gardner etc. Wickham and Ji were poor replacements. Some of our best players were loanees etc.

He's right and wrong imo. Yes, the remit pretty much will be to stay up (which they'll manage). I don't think Ashley is really planning or expecting an assault on the top half with what is a relatively weak squad. Also think he won't want to invest enough to push them on because he'd get no return from it. That being said I watched the Brentford game and fuck me they were poor. I mean, being a mediocre side you can accept but they had a great chance of reaching a semi final, against a good side from the league below but one that was very weakened. They showed no passion, no ambition, it was absolutely turgid stuff. If you're going to be stuck just accepting survival as an aim, the least you can do is give your all to try and win a cup. Obviously wouldn't go as far as to say I have sympathy for them, but watched a few games recently and I wouldn't be happy watching that either tbh.

He did well but then when it went sour it went really sour.

We lost 9 out of 10 games across February, March and April, ending the season on a real low. We started the next season on a similar low and were in the bottom two by November after a poor close season of poor signings.

What we needed to hear from our manager was this wasn’t good enough, we needed to improve, we needed quality and we were in a relegation battle but we wouldn’t be in one next season. Instead he denied the problem and called it hysteria. That’s not a good look for a manager of a struggling side.

“I was never accepted as I managed Sunderland”
That pissed me off after he left when he started talking about how our supporters never accepted him. I know that personally I couldn’t have been any more in favour of him during the majority of his tenure.

In the end it came purely down to results and his inability to paper over the cracks after losing a massive number of goals in the form of Bent, Gyan et al. I’m convinced we would have ended up relegated.

That said, in retrospect, I would’ve still been reasonably confident in his ability to bounce back and get us promoted again first time, which is not something I could ever say about Moyes, who was the manager we ultimately stuck with.

We chose to flog darren bent and jordan henderson, didnt recruit to replace them at all imo.

Bought a load of plodders for free and ended up with a poor team. Was his own doing imo

To be fair he has got a similar record to Rafa but they never got on his case. Never got them close to a cup quarter final either.

Rafa got to the league cup quarter final as well.

This isn’t about him anyway. This is about Bruce being an absolute charlatan. Getting beat off Man City is no big deal, but scraping 4 points off 3 newly promoted sides and getting battered off a 2nd choice champ side I do find difficult to take.

Followed by it never being his fault, and blaming the fans. He’s a joke.

To be fair getting pumped off a championship side that made 6 changes in a game that would have seen them reach their first league Cup semi-final since 1976, was always going to be an issue for him. We have got to the league cup semi finals 3 times since then and won 2 of those semis and we would have reacted just as badly as their fans did.

Still funny though....
