Northumberland CCC

Does anyone follow their fortunes closely? Used to regularly keep tabs on the minor counties in the Cricket Paper but it’s been years since I’ve bought it. From time to time I’d see detailed match reports of their games in the Journal too but I can’t say I’ve heard anything about them in donkeys.

I notice they’re playing Durham tomorrow at Jesmond, expect there’ll be a canny crowd in. Hopefully Durham can avoid another upset

Appear to be a team made up of current or very recent Durham academy players, a few current uni students and a couple of experienced local club cricketers.
I suppose another sign of the times with cricket. Although NEPL t20 finals day doesn't help.

For the last few years they have been a bit of a mixed bag tbh - both in terms of player make up and results.

Availability, especially for 3 day comp, makes it difficult and therefore lots of talented young late school/uni lads, some Durham acad or 2nd XI players who Durham want to have some more cricket but not with them, an ex pro or 2 getting a little pay day and a few teachers who are off for holidays…

I think (without knowing in great depth the strength of minor counties as a whole) they probably punch above their weight overall.

It certainly seems to an outsider like me that the minor counties competition isn’t as strong as what it once was. I reckon the death of the knockout competition which used to see them playing against First Class counties every year hasn’t helped.

There's an excellent book 'The Wicket Men : The Last Rites Of The Minor Countoes Championship' by Tony Hannon in which the author follows Cumberland in the glorious (weather wise) season of 2018 as well as visiting various Cumbrian cricket clubs.

It's a great insight into the dying days of a system that had lasted 125 years and the declining interest in it none more so when the Cumberland captain - a certain Gary Pratt- leaves the field at 3.30pm in the Cumberland v Herts match at Barrow to travel to Hartlepool to play for his club Richmondshire.

Well recommended.

Had planned to pop along to Jesmond on Monday to watch the second day of Northumberland v Norfolk but 24 wickets fell on the first day with the home side in complete control so it wasn't worth my while. North won by 10 wkts by lunchtime.

I will have to seek that out, but my concern would be that it’ll depress me too much :(

Cricket matches in August are unsurprisingly few and far between in so I may pop along to the 3 day game at home to Herts. commencing Aug 10th. Just a pity its at Gosforth and not Jesmond.

At Norfolk ccc v Northumberland ccc. Delayed start at Sprowston park as the ground is still a bit wet, there’s a brisk wind with some sunny intervals.
Norfolk were 249 for 9 at the close. Northumberland were pushing for ‘all out’ although they didn’t manage that there was great spin from Max Williamson and Joe Stuart in the overcast conditions.

Playing in Cambridgeshire today in the Super 12s stage of the Minor Counties T20 competition.

Beat Cambridgeshire in game 1 and currently 80/2 chasing 170 v Cumbria in Game 2.

I believe winner goes through to a finals day at Wormsley.

Strong team out.

There was no rain clearly, weather forecast was lousy for there.

Won by 8 wickets - Appleby and Oswell 60* in the chase (16.5 overs).

Great effort and result - huge well done to whole team and squad across the campaign this far and double header today. Youldon with a crucial match winning knock in the first game.

T20 Semi Final result

Northumberland all out for 128
Dorset won by 38 runs.

The sausage and chips were nice.
