Norman Gifford RIP!

Sad news of passing of Durhams former coach during the tough times of the 1990s.
More associated with Worcestershire but puffing on his pipe was my image of him around Durham.
RIP Norman.
Coach at Durham in those days was what's called a hard paper round. He was a good but not great spinner yet managed over 2000 wickets at 23.5 runs each and economy of 2.27. Each county had an effective spinner. Batsmen are more aggressive nowadays but that shouldn't cause such a great demise.

Can remember watching him playing for England in the early 70s but agree the image of him sitting on the balcony puffing away on his pipe as we suffered yet another batting collapse will be my main memory of him.

Unfortunate to be in the same era as Illingworth and Underwood, which limited his international career.

RIP
