Non (premier) league football thread.

They've been trying to build a hotel on the site for years, but the plans are probably still stuck in the courts somewhere.

Another one to add to your list would be the Don Valley in Sheffield, Rotherham played there for a bit.

Don Valley has been demolished as far as I know? Jess Ennis trained there and campaigned to keep it open.

Redheugh Park - Gateshead
Simonside - South Shields
Consett - Bell vue stadium ( old one)
Durham City - Ferens Park

Redheugh is now partly a 5 a side site. I have seen a game on the park pitch beside it (Nursery House v the Thomas Wilson club in the Gateshead and district league as my daughters boyfriend was playing) but its a very debatable one as that pitch is not really fully where the Gateshead league pitch was.

I dont think South Shields played at Simonside in their league days.

Consett were never a football league team. Great old ground though.

Durham City left the old Ferens park many years ago and its now a housing estate. Sadly they have also now left the new Ferens Park.

I might be missing the point of the thread but would the Oval not count? It held FA Cup Finals iirc.

No it wouldn't. We are looking for grounds that have hosted football league matches and are still in use. The Oval was used for FA Cup finals not league matches.

You could go and watch Bradford College Cricket Academy, they play at Bradford Park Avenue's original ground at Horton Park Avenue. There's still the perimeter wall and an old terrace there.

EDIT: Are we talking strictly grounds that are still used for football here?

Peel Croft, Burton. League footy there all the way back at the turn of the century, rugby played there now.

The Northolme, Gainsbrough Trinity

North Road, Glossop (only cricket now)

The Shay, Halifax

Penydarren Park, Merthyr Tydfil

Millmoor, Rotherham (it's still there, dunno what's going on with it atm like)

Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield (Rotherham again, played there a few years before their new ground was built)

Clifton Lane, Rotherham Town (again!, now just rugby and a bit of cricket there)

Nene Park, Rushden & Diamonds

Bower Field, Stalybridge Celtic

Borough Park, Workington

Bootham Crescent, York

Love a bit wikipedia when i'm bored at work!!

Good list there, some covered in the thread and some not. Millmoor is derelict. I have seen Sunderland play there anyway but me and Pete from here went to check it out after the pre season friendly earlier this season. Don Valley has been demolished I think. Nene Park is not in use, Merthyr Tydfil have never been a football league side.

The Burton, Glossop and Gainsborough ones are top additions mind. I think the rest are already on the list.

Re Durham, in their league days they payed at Holiday Park not old Ferens Park, so even if it were still in use it would not count.

My uncle was up in Glasgow about 10 years back and he was at a garage filling up when he recognized his surroundings a bit having been born and brought up in Glasgow. He noticed a large wall on one side of the garage, he asked where he was and was told that the wall used to be part of Third Lanarks ground that he used to visit frequently as a kid.! Kind of non related but I needed to share it with ya'll

Nice story but there are no walls nor any petrol filling stations anywhere near Third Lanarks old place. Could easily be Clydebank though?

south shields or south shields Adelaide played at what become a greyhound track which is an estate now. it was called Horsley Hill Stadium.

filtrona will be south shields's league stadium in about 5 years. unless the council build a ground at gypsys green.

more chance of shields going to Gateshead than getting any help off the council though!

Lots in evidence at Third Lanark but no outer walls and there is no petrol station anywhere close as its in a housing estate. Its a remarkable place with terraces still visible on three sides but nothing else really. The pitch is still in place as well.

Worth a visit if you are ever in the area and definately if you are going to Hampden as its only about 10 mins away by foot. Loads of photos on the net;

Its the best standing relic of an old football ground anywhere in the UK by a mile.

yes i just had a look, and re-read the history of their demise. I know my uncle used to go to the Thirds but maybe he was confused about where he was.

That's a very bold statement.

South Shields currently play at level 9 and in 5 years you are telling me they will be at level 4? Impressive if it happens. Hundreds of other clubs have tried, (and are still trying), and failed mind so I won't be holding my breath. Level 5 is awash with ex football league clubs such as York, Tranmere, Aldershot, Dagenham, Gateshead, Wrexham, Torquay, Southport, Chester, Barrow and Maidstone. They are all 4 leagues higher than Shields at the moment but will no doubt lie down and let the mariners pass through when the time comes. No doubt Darlington, Stockport, Hereford, Scarborough, Boston Utd et all will also stand aside once the mighty Shields get to their level. The other millionare funded sides such as Eastliegh, AFC Fylde and Forest Green will also step aside once the Mariners get up there. Not to mention FC United of Manchester. They can't compete with South Tynesides finest either. Neither will Blyth.

And Salford will stop investing and just Let the mighty Shields through.

None of the newly relegated clubs from the Football League in the next 5 years will bother trying to get back up either. Spennymoor? Who are they? Its all about South Shields.........

Lets be honest here. Sunderland are closer to winning the Champions league than South Shields are to getting into the football league.

They would not even be top of the current Northern League (one of 16 divisions at level 9 in the English pyramid) even if they win the two games in hand, yet they want us to belive they can win the league at increasingly higher standards for the next 5 years running?

And we thought the mags were deluded?

Nothing wrong with ambition but try walking before you run lads eh...

Slight confusion on my part there, Merthyr Town were in the first ever football league division 3 & played at the that ground.

Even though you were way off the mark with your 5 years Andy, he would still have been bitter about Shields if you had said 25 years. His bitterness oozes out of his comments about anything South Shields related.
probably had a dodgy curry in ocean road at some stage!

Early forecast but its due to be clear tomorrow night so hopefully no more postponements.

does non league only cover the north east like? Tower Hamlets FC have a game tonight against Barkingside FC in the Essex Senior League. 5th bottom at the moment so looking to move away from the bottom, albeit they have only won one at home all season.
