Non League Football

Was in a hotel last night and the kings lynn team were staying for their game against blyth. Two questions spring to mind, why on earth are they playing in National league north. And are they full time pro’s? If so how do they generate the cash to have a full time set up and stay overnight in hotels for away trips?
Kings Lynn isn’t really that far south. It’s further north than Birmingham. If they were in the National League South, they have longer trips to Yeovil, Weymouth, Torquay and Truro.

Ended up going to Brighouse today with Dunston. Comfortable 3-1 win on a bobbly pitch. Dunston have 11 games left with 3 games in hand over top of the league Stockton. Looks like they’ll finish in the playoffs at least, but could be an interesting title race. Attendance - 77.
Maskell hat trick . Playing against him last season in PDSL he’s going to have a good non league career

Fantastic opportunity for Gateshead to go back to Wembley for the Trophy Final for the 2nd season running. Semi final draw made today.

Gateshead v Macclesfield
Bromley v Solihull Moors

Macclesfield are on the rise but they are two divisions below Gateshead. Games are one off not two legs.
Great opportunity. Went to the semi last season and would have gone to this but Sunderland are at home the same day unfortunately.

I will go to the final if they get there, which for my sins will be the first gateshead game I will have been to since last years final:oops:

I normally try to see them at an away game at least once a season to knock of a new ground but life and the fixtures have not alligned this season so far.

Its still possible they could be at Wembley two weeks running in early May. Highly unlikley but possible.

Will be at Wembley a third time to watch them ... if. Still an if. Strange competition this one. Last year Gateshead made hard work of National North opposition. Macclesfield will probably have as many, if not more fans at the International Stadium than the Heed and it will be interesting. Winners get £15k, losers £5k. Losing finalists £30k and winners £60k. A share of Wembley receipts could be around £100k. For Gateshead, cash strapped without their own ground and relatively poor support ( although 1200 was a decent turn out against Peterborough Sports) , beating Macclesfield is huge - apart from the potential Wembley glory.
And they still have the playoffs ...

The reason they have done so well this season is partly due to the Langstaff cash but also the money from getting to last years final.

They have a big home game tomorrow night v Dagenham and Redbridge in the league. Had a blip recently so could do with a win to keep up with the play off pace. They are still in the last play off place with a game in hand on all the sides above them and two games in hand on Oldham who are one place above, so still well placed to make the play offs.

As it stands its not beyond possibility that both the National League Play off final (Sat 4th May) and the FA Trophy final (Sat 11th May) could be Bromley v Gateshead or Solihull Moors v Gateshead on consecutive weeks. On top of that the last home game is v Bromley.
Last year had we made the play offs it would have been two visits to Wembley on consecutive weekends with Sunderland and Gateshead and I provisionally looked at booking the week off and getting cheap flights to Europe and back from one of the London airports to watch some football rather that traispe up and down two weeks running. This would have taken in the Bulgarian FA Cup Final by the way  .

Might do the same if by some miracle Gateshead get the double header.

Weirdly I was at the other semi-final last season. Altrincham v Halifax. We played Burnley on the Friday night, so I stayed over to knock Altrincham off my list on the Saturday.

Just noticed Dunston are currently 2nd in the NPL east division but only had an attendance of 77 for Saturdays home game. Seems incredibly low especially for a Saturday game when the mags aren’t playing.

Tamworth edging closer to winning the league ahead of Scunthorpe. Amazing achievement it’ll be. Scunthorpe were 6/4 to win the league start of season

That explains that then.

What isn't explained is why?

OK their pitch is knackered, and they played the previous match at Consett (imagine weather being better at Consett than anywhere?)

But Brighouse? Surely there's better options? Bishop Auckland? Spennymoor? Darlington? South Shields? Gateshead?

Have Dunston upset someone in the Northeast FAs

The 3G pitch at Consett is probable the reason to be fair.

Brighouse is a strange choice though.

Would imagine that clubs are protective of their grass pitches with the weather and amount of games to come. But there are plenty of clubs with artificial surfaces that could host games at that level locally - a Stockton or even New Ferens Park if Consetts wasn’t available?
