I think it will go through, but they are not going to be a City or PSG. Investment is obviously good, but even 200m will not get them top 4.

From memory the city takeover went through almost overnight. If this lot are willing to chuck cash about like the mags expect it would have been done by now.

Fulham spent over £100m last year I think so that shows it’s by no means a guarantee of success.

That’s what should be worrying the mags tbh mate. Ulimately it’s not very professional that the group are using the media and it makes you wonder if they are trying to force Ashley to drop his price a bit.

Isn't that what we all do though,, we get excited and rightfully so.. It would be rather dull if we didn't.

For what its worth, I wouldn't think we would do a Man City or Chelsea, I would hope to follow the Spurs path, build over time. They are capable of spending but spend wisely.
As it happens this could prove to be a bad move for one player I really want to see develop, that is Longstaff, that boy has huge potential and if we did do a Football Manager cheat code Longstaff would be pushed out.
I would imagine every Newcastle fan will be getting a tingle in his dingle at the moment but that's to be expected. If it turned out this new guy just wants to run a sensible football club but is prepared to put his own money in for a few marquee signings but mainly to develop the club and have it run off it's own income over time (Ashley) that's fine with me.
Our academy is starting to bare fruit, so we have some talent who may break through anyway, even without this sheikh.

This story may have been leaked and they have been forced into talking to the press.

The only thing about that is that if proof of funds was confirmed on 17th April, the talks with Benítez started a long time after that, yet if reports are to believed, he knew nothing about the offer when news broke on Sunday. So it would seem he wasn’t made aware of the possible sale during the talks. All ifs and buts admittedly.

I think something is happening mate, but it also doesn’t really add up. Had this group been Man City Mk2, the deal would be done and Rafa would have a new contract - especially if proof of funds was supplied on 17th April.

Liverpool apparently were not impressed with this group, and I wonder if Ashley is doubting them as well.

There sometimes is, Kenyon and that Staveley woman spring to mind. I read somewhere today that there are other interested parties looking at us (again all rumours) but if there were it wouldn't suprise me one bit if Ashley orchestrated the "leak" to the press to either hurry them up or start a bidding war, or make sure he gets his asking price, which I can't blame him for that. Will have to just wait and see.. We've certainly been here before.

Yeah it's bizzare as hell. There is too many stories going around, similar stories with "quotes" but then the quotes don't match. It's the weirdest takeover I have seen that's for sure.. If indeed that's what this turns out to be.

As you say, the serious takeovers tend to take you by suprise, with announcing the new owners in a TV interview at their newly purchased stadium.

Not as easily as its being made out. Its mega money for one game. I wouldn't even consider going at those prices, don't care about it being a one off.

I reckon we would as a one off but Christ, those Arsenal fans must be sick as chips now.

The likes of another City type takeover are reducing - one of the reasons City's owners spent big so quickly (and they were very open about their 'accelerated investment' was to try and get into the top tier before the big clubs drew up the draw bridge in the form of FFP. It was known for a while that big clubs wanted to shut up shop, and anybody wanting to infiltrate the top tier had to do it damn quick...

That's not to say really good and heavy investment won't happen again - I'm sure it will, but it's now become a lot harder to spend big. Whether that's a good thing or not is debatable, and there are good arguments either way, but what's far worse is a really crap owner almost destroying a club (like Blackpool and Bolton) with the authorities showing little real concern for that.

In some ways, I'd say Sunderland are a more attractive proposition that Newcastle - simply because Newcastle are already in the PL, and will cost more. How much more profitable can an owner make it? Sunderland on the other hand (very much like City) could be bought for less and providing they could be turned around successfully, the relative improvement and growth could be more attractive.

Without being disrespectful, it's akin to buying a decent house in a decent street (Newcastle) for 200K and doing it up to make it worth 250K. You could equally buy Sunderland, a house that needs a little more work on it, for 100K, but transform it into one worth 200K for the same amount of effort - ergo it's actually a more profitable exercise.

I'm over-simplifying things massively, but I think you'll get the gist - 'as it stands' improving Newcastle might cost a lot. Improving Sunderland might not cost quite as much.

FFP in the first season of new owners doesn't exist to the extent it does for established chairman/clubs. New owners get a grace period where they can over spend.
Also Newcastle don't anywhere near receive their potential revenue due to Sports Direct taking the lions share, so we would greatly increase that. Last seasons Premier league income was announced a short while ago, despite finishing lower, we were in the top 10. Being live on sky 19 times only beaten by 5 clubs (or maybe 6 can't remember er) and our facilities income was top 6 or 7, around there. We make a profit, and still spend, well actually not that much.

But with investment our revenues could grow quite a bit, not to the extent man u, Liverpool or spurs. But we are currently the 5th biggest earners in the premier league. FFP may well stop Messi signings but we should be able to compete with 6 - 13.

After the Staveley and Kenyon fiascos Ashley said that if anyone got wind of negotiations in the future he'd withdraw from the deal. He reckoned people were approaching him and then leaking it to the press to 'raise their profile'. Presumably because neither of those people actually had the money and they were using the media to drive the takeover and drum up interest / funds from other parties.

Quite what these are up to contacting the media, emailing the Chronicle and releasing statements to the press I don't know?

Sounds a bit like what you are doing now. Probably could have easily finished 10th again if Rafa tried to win games rather than concentrate on not getting beat.
