No. There were 4 English teams in the 68/69 fairs cup. It wasn't invitational after 1961.

But you didn't qualify.

The FA invited you as they were enforcing a rule that said we couldn't enter London FC or Birmingham Albion etc.

You were the closest they had to a one city team.

UEFA or whoever ran were doing invites, the home FA were - you were invited to take a place they couldn't fill.

I think the point is though that if it was like the uefa cup you wouldn't have even qualified as the one club per city rule wouldn't have existed. Pretty big difference.

You did beat some canny teams in that run regardless though

Leeds, Chelsea and Liverpool also entered. One club per city. Everton Tottenham and Arsenal missed out on the one club per city rule.
Had man united not won the european cup in 68, then they'd have qualified for it.

The uefa cup now goes to 7th place if the fa and league cups are won by teams in 5th place or higher. Similar in that it was awarded on league position but that the FA still enforced the one club per city rule. We were fortunate to qualify but it was clearly a proper competition

"Renamed" the UEFA Cup. More like it was abolished and a real competition was put in it's place. 3 clubs finished above you but were not allowed to enter because they share a city, that's not a competition worth talking about. Not to mention some teams didn't even bother turning up for fixtures.

If in 1968 the UEFA cup existed you wouldn't have qualified though. It clearly isn't the UEFA cup or it's forerunner but like I said still some decent teams beaten along the way.

Which teams were they then?

Definitely a forerunner for the uefa cup, that's why they took it over and renamed it the uefa cup. I cited sources saying the same thing, as requested, and as predicted its just dismissed.
No worries.

There was more than one. The one I think I remember was Hamburg. I'm sure the information is available online.

"Renamed" :lol:

We qualified for the UEFA cup in 1970 through winning it.

Puts it on a par with the Intertoto. Sounds about right.

One club per city rule still enforced by the english FA.
Man City entered the european cup as champions, Man Utd entered the european cup as defending champions.
3rd place Liverpool entered the fairs cup.
4th place Leeds entered the fairs cup as defending champions.
5th everton couldn't enter due to FA still enforcing one club per city rule.
6th chelsea entered fairs cup
7th tottenham, same as everton
8th west brom won the fa cup and entered the cup winners cup
9th arsenal same problem as Tottenham and everton
10th Newcastle.

Nowt to do with teams not wanting to enter it.
That's some backdoor mind!

Your own link provided information that was rather different to what you had already claimed.

Hamburg, Copenhagen and Luxembourg. Hamburg had too many fixtures to fulfil following a series of postponements.
Luxembourg and Copenhagen withdrew in protest at the invasion of Czechoslovakia
