Wasn't pre season, and wasn't invitational after 1960.
Was initially one club per city, which was abolished in 61, although the english FA kept up this rule.
Fifa regard it as a major honour, although uefa don't because they didn't organise it, but they took over running it in 71 and renamed it the uefa cup.
Uefa cup
It was Mickey mouse man. Some teams couldn't even be arsed to turn up.

The standard response from this board.
50 teams qualifying via league position from across Europe (apart from England who kept the one club per city rule) is a major tournament, as fifa recognise.
Along the way Newcastle beat Inter, Feyenoord, Sporting Lisbon, Benfica and Rangers. Were all them not taking it seriously either?

Wrote Benfica there when I meant to write Settubal. Also beat Real Zaragoza en route, wrote "inter" where i was going to write "in the first round" for Feyenoord. Predictive texy and writing on the sly ffs

Oh did another gravy skidmark tell you that? It's bollocks, UEFA started anew tournament and the Inter-City Fairs Trophy was discontinued as pointless. It was not renamed re-branded or continued in any way shape or form.

FFS. You'd be more honest trying to talk up your inter-toto certificate, seriously.

Uefa took over the running of it and renamed it.
In the early 60s Barcelona won it and so entered to defend it the following year whilst simultaneously playing in the European Cup.
Had uefa not took over the running of the fairs cup, it would've ran on at the same time as the uefa cup, not just ceased be at the same time as uefa started their 3rd competition. Do your research

Sunderland fans claiming to be an authority on European football. Speaking from their vast competitive experience

Milwall have a similar amount of European experience.

Uefa don't recognise it as a European trophy. Which says it all really.

It was more of an exhibition really. Much like our sportsnight 5 a side tournament win in the mid 80s.

OK, let's humour the gravy boat, if we suspend reality and let this not be entirely made up shite, can you offer any links to prove it, that aren't written by a slack jawed-dee?

No they didn't. It's a completely different competition.

I am aware that whatever I post here will just be dismissed.

Wiki page about the Fairs Cup:
After 1968, it was sometimes referred to as the Runners-up Cup, with teams now qualifying based on league position. In 1971, it came under the auspices of and was replaced by the .

English era
The 1967 tournament saw the emergence of English clubs with Leeds United reaching the final. Although they lost to Dinamo Zagreb, they returned the following season and defeated Ferencvárosi TC to become the first English club to win the competition. The subsequent victories of and and a second win for Leeds United saw English clubs winning the last four Fairs Cup tournaments. The last final saw Leeds United declared winners on away goals after drawing with Juventus 3–3 on aggregate.

UEFA Cup
In the 1971–72 season the competition was taken over by and relaunched as the . By replacing the trophy, renaming the competition, and revising the entry regulations, UEFA effectively ended the Fairs Cup.

From the wikipedia page on the Uefa Cup in the history section:

The UEFA Cup was preceded by the , which was a European competition played between 1955 and 1971. The competition grew from 11 teams during the first cup () to 64 teams by the last cup which was played in . It had become so important on the European football scene that in the end it was taken over by and relaunched the following season as the UEFA Cup.

From Barcelona's website about their victories in the competition
It is more than 50 years since FC Barcelona’s third conquest of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, the tournament that in 1971 became the UEFA Cup and is currently known as the Europa League.

From this website:

quickly turned into a kind of ‘runners-up’ cup for clubs who had not managed to qualify for one of the two UEFA competitions.
This lasted until 1971, when due to the increased commercialisation of European football the very idea of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup had become redundant. UEFA then took over the competition and ran it after under the name ‘UEFA Cup’.

So there you have it. Although I fully expect it not to be acknowledged. The trade fairs thing was done away with in the early to mid 60s. Certainly Newcastle had never held a trade fair. Lots of Europe abandoned the one club per city rule, but the FA still used it. Hence Newcastle gaining entry.

'Taken over' as in terminated

You qualified even though you finished 10th as no one else wanted to enter it

One club per city rule still enforced by the english FA.
Man City entered the european cup as champions, Man Utd entered the european cup as defending champions.
3rd place Liverpool entered the fairs cup.
4th place Leeds entered the fairs cup as defending champions.
5th everton couldn't enter due to FA still enforcing one club per city rule.
6th chelsea entered fairs cup
7th tottenham, same as everton
8th west brom won the fa cup and entered the cup winners cup
9th arsenal same problem as Tottenham and everton
10th Newcastle.

Nowt to do with teams not wanting to enter it.

So you were invited by the FA to be their English representative?
