when they talk about net spend i think they are v lucky they got crazy money for sissoko 30m, 'gini' 25m and big fees for janmaaaaaat, 3 players that were a big factor in their relegation then also 6m for the youth kid who went to everton.
The only one who benitez lost who was performing was townsend, and they got their money back for him.
The issue is he built a team good enough to go up, but with a lot of signings frozen out , worse than his existing fringe players he had already frozen out, or not quite premier level like gayle- he has made stacks of odd cheap signings when signing less players of a higher quality would have seen them better off.
Exactly like we used to every summer.
good player available for 8m, proven? nah too much
so we sign 3-4 players for 2.5-4m each all of whom are shite and dont play, so we spent more than signing the proper player in the first place.
They keep rattling on about not breaking the transfer record of 16m for owen, but they have signed
murphy 13m
shelvey 15m
townsend 13m
ritchie 12m
gaye 12m ish too?
muto 10m
mitrovic 13
thauvin 12
plus loans of high value players kenedy, rondon, slimani
in the last few years.
Watford sign a host of cheap randoms each year , some misfire but some end up v good value- the murphy signing especially smacked of not being arsed to scout the worldwide market and get a player who was never going to be good enough to justify being their main signing.
I totally agree that after a 10th place they should have built on the good feeling they had on the back of that and , but can see why Ashley might be hesitant given his poor signings record.
