I know what you're saying but I think it's fair to say that Ashley hasn't backed Benitez in the market as much as Benitez wanted, or as much as this squad has needed. Profits from player sales, money from promotion and a top 10 finish in the first season back should mean Benitez has a lot of money to spend in this coming window. fwiw I think we will spend £70m+ and we certainly have generated/will generate more than that. Newcastle got c£120m from the Premier League this season, add to that any monies we get from selling the likes of Sels, Mitrovic etc. Ashley has spent big in the past (McClaren) and we're in a better position now than we were then, with a much better manager to boot.

Benitez has done well but imagine how much better we'd be doing if we had have got Grayson instead. I read it on here that he was soooooo much better so it must be true.

So basically you want Ashley to use his wealth rather than run the club like a business?

One way ticket to league 1 like we are. Thing is Ashley is a business man not a nufc fan. If he backed Rafa and it goes wrong he wouldnt take the loss the club would then youd be on his back even more. The bloke cant win

No, I want Ashley to permit Benitez to use the funds raised by player sales and competition money to strengthen the squad. This season brought £120m into the company coffers from the Premier League and that's before match day income, player sales and any commercial deals. From that I don't think it's unreasonable to want a very good manager who's delivered a top ten finish in the first season back, to be fully backed in the transfer market to make sure that we remain a Premier League club next year.

He needs to sanction the recruitment of players who will improve the playing squad, for two reasons; 1, if he doesn't Benitez will go (and fuck knows who would replace him, but he's not likely going to be a better manager) and 2, this squad over-achieved this season and we shouldn't expect that feat to be repeated.

Read what I've said again. All the revenue streams (apart from TV) have dropped because of his mismanagement. I also don't think it's unreasonable to ask Sportsdirect to pay for it's advertising, or the club to get 100% of the revenue from NUFC merchandise.

I have absolutely no problem with the club living within its means, but I think he has a duty as an owner, to at least try and improve the club on and off the pitch, rather than just spending the bare minimum just to exist in the PL.

Of course every manager would love to have a limitless pot of money. Benitez spent less than all but Burnley and Bournemouth, despite having a Championship squad to build on.

Needed to all but guarantee survival. Before the season kicked off, plenty on here were predicting a long hard season fighting relegation for us. Our January loan business made sure we capitalised on the poor seasons of West Ham, Southampton, West Brom and Stoke. Had we had Dubravka, Kenedy and a striker of note for the entire season we may have had an even better year, or at least made sure we were never in the relegation conversation.
