He won't go now he wasn't selected for the recent friendlies but I was surprised Southgate didn't have a look at him against Holland or Italy. I remember watching him when he was coming onto the scene at Charlton and watched him in an England Under-17 game of which he was captain. He looked exactly the same as he did now and about 10 years older than the rest of the players. He bossed the game and you could see he would 'make it'.

People question his temprement, and rightly so, but I would take him, as we're in depesrate need of a deep-lying playmaker (ala De Bruyne, Pirlo, Kroos). Obviously he's not in that bracket but who else is there that could do that job? Wilshere is the only real alternative.

He can pick a pass and someone on the this thread earlier stated that he needs people to make runs for him in order for that to happen. Well I would argue Sterling, Kane, Vardy and Alli are capable of making more intelligent runs than his current Newcastle teammates.

The worst that can happen is that he loses his head, gets sent off, and sends England crashing home (something we're already used to). The best that can happen, he can unlock defences, create that one moment, and win the...match against Panama.

Take him.

How's that?

So because he stayed at Newcastle he's now suddenly no longer a good manager. How does B necessarily follow A?

Well could you imagine Klopp/Mourinho/Tuchel stopping around in those circumstances or more to the point not having any of the better sides not just in the PL but Europe/China sniffing around?

Everton, Leicister, Crystal Palace, Southampton and Stoke all looked elswhere this season amongst many top clubs in Europe.

As far as im aware he's had no concrete interest despite his CV and past achievements which alludes to my point that whilst he's still a decent manager football seems to have passed him by among others.

His game requires time on the ball, which he would get at international level. However he also needs good running and movement ahead of him, which we don't have much of. Also he likes to go back to front, usually with long passes to someone running in behind and at international level teams sit deeper so you never really see it often.

Conclusion is he would be a pointless addition.

Alli, Vardy, Sterling, Rashford, Lingard, Oxlade-Chamberlain... all willing runners.

If his face fits and the press want him to go . Put him on the plane. It’s isually the case , joe hart has one good game and people were saying he should be number one. It’s all about favouritism with England that’s why they get knocked out off shite like Iceland. Favouritism not form

Benitez is a good manager, anyone who said otherwise before or after the season was just being delusional and hopeful that they'd fuck up. Got to give credit where it's due, he's done a good job with limited resources.

Still think he'll leave in the summer and then it'll get very interesting...

the mags struggle when he is out of the team, sure we were linked with him at one point and i would have been happy had it gone through...can be a very intelligent player, would not be unhappy if he was picked for england.

I've not seen him this year but I always thought he was decent. He can pass for a start.

Shows how far England have tumbled considering him for a place though. Hoddle, Gascoigne, Scholes...Shelvey

Think we have Henderson, Dier, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Wilshire, Winks and Loftus-Cheek ahead of him in the pecking order.

Shelvey is one of the best passers of the ball we have but off the ball he is a liability. I don't think we can afford to hve him in the side to be honest.

The sad thing is you are probably correct. What a joke!

They're very happy with Benitez, we were very happy with Big Sam. Both good managers. Your lot seem to think your too good for Sam (and Benitez as well I'd imagine). For a team that hasn't finished above 4th in the last 30 years that's pretty delusional.

I disagree.
Personally I think the teams crying out for his style of player, whether he actually would be the one is another matter, there's not many of that type of player around these days.
