New shirt thread/Elvis link (no shirts yet)

Am I the only one that hasn't a clue what the fuck we are doing trying to have a 'collaboration' with the estate of a singer who died 50 years ago? What the fuck has this got to do with SAFC?

And our away strips are going to be minging pink and black, based on the favourite colours of a long dead American singer with no connection to the club?

If it was Liverpool / Everton trying to market themselves as a club with a link to The Beatles, I'd probably not much like it but I would at least understand it.

This just feels as cringey, as forced, and as plastic as fuck to be honest. And it's not exactly fresh or contemporary.

I realise I seem to be in a small minority looking at this thread, but I cringe every time I see it publicised tbh. I can pretty much guarantee that whichever marketing 'expert' came up with this knows nothing about SAFC.
Opinions are opinions. But I think it's quite obvious why we are doing it. The pre-match song of can't help falling in love has become quite iconic for us. Especially the moments it's been used for lately after promotion and getting europe. You have players like Xhaka in awe of it every game. Seems quite obvious why we have tried to create a kit and marketing based on that. Also this partnership could be massive for our reach and revenue with these new rules. Very smart business.

In regards to the kit, that's all personal preference. I back Hummel to make a very nice kit myself

Little to lose beyond maybe being to the dislike of a few which could be far outweighed by giving us a deifferentiator when us broadcasters are choosing which Premier league club they choose to talk about.

Depending on the way the deal is structured it could essentially be free eyeballs in one of the biggest growth markets in the world.

This for having them influence the colour of a third kit seems like a good deal for very little risk.

Also categorically claims the anthem as ours before Hull start piping up.

So we're doing this in the hope that broadcasters in the US, the most introspective sporting country in the world, start talking about a foreign team in a minority sport, and as a result Americans flock to buy the away kit of a team they have never heard of, because they play in the favourite colours of a singer who died 50 years ago but has no link with that club beyond the fans singing one of his songs in the ground?

Tbf mate there is a massive fanbase all over the world for elvis, quite a few collectors too. This kit could become just that, a collectors item

I dare say you have been to a match at the SOL, but this post comes across as being from someone who has never stepped foot in the place 🫪

Although you’re right in that there is no actual connection between the City and Elvis, the ‘cant help falling in love with you’ song is a big part of the club.

A lot of our supporters have had the song played at their wedding or at a funeral of a loved one. It means something to them.

By striking a deal with the Elvis estate it will hopefully achieve three things….

1. Attract a lot of publicity
2. Hopefully shift more shirts in the US.
3. Shift a record number of shirts to our core fanbase.

If that happens, it would have been a huge success and the club deserves a lot of credit for trying something new.

Except you couldnt be more wrong. DB will have been well and truly involved in this whilst he was here - these things are month and months in the making, they dont just happen on one phone call.

I dont think you understand how big the Elvis reach is, its not just about the States.

Would you have preferred a collab with Jacky Whites, or The Bridges?

So I accept (of course) that the song is an important part of who we are. No arguments there.

I just don't follow the logic that a collaboration with the writer of that song, 50 years after his death, is going to be some kind of moneyspinner. There just seem to be way too many assumptions in that.

I'm not sure this will really attract publicity in the way we seem to think it will. How much of a news story is this to a teenager in Chicago or a soccer mom in Cleveland or an Elvis fan in Boston? Why would they care?

Yes, of course if this leads to our away kits going like shit off a shovel there is at least a financial benefit. Hopefully that happens.

I just remember having similar arguments about 'Invest in Africa' and being told how great it was going to be that we were going to be the top club in Africa.

I mean you're just making up daft arguments now that I've never suggested. Crack on, but I'm not going to waste time engaging.

How am I making up daft arguments? Your view/opinion appears very blinkered from how you've put it across - I struggle to understand how anyone cant see the commercial value in pushing out SAFC as a "brand" when we've been so insular for so many years.

Quite a lot of nice pink shirts in history imo. Hummel have made some lovely ones too. I think it’ll be toppa

when I use the colour picker to check the shade of pink out of the advert we used it seems to be a paleish pink which is a good sign.

Hummel smashed this (imo) before here
I’m not a fan of pink kits, but this shade of it looks great.

Elvis didn’t write it.

From what I understand bud is that we are really going to push the club in the US next month. We will be in Nashville for the week and you will see a lot of images of the new kit with the Elvis collaboration.

Given how popular Elvis still is in that part of the world, the club will hope that not only will Elvis fans buy the top but they also pick up a few more long term fans.

Of course, they will also hope the kit goes on to break records with our traditional base.

From the clubs point of view, they will know it’s virtually impossible to take on the big clubs in the US. The likes of Utd, Liverpool and Chelsea have spent decades building up a fanbase. Collaborations like this though might just allow us to make some small gains in a huge market.

Little things like getting publicity on local TV in Nashville etc, can make a difference. This collaboration will hopefully help that as well

It's brand awareness, even if it's not a moneyspinner, it grows our name in a worldwide sense. Same reason Chinese gambling companies who don't do business in the UK sometimes sponsor Premier League clubs.

We’ve almost certainly had to pay for the rights mate. Given his global appeal though, the club will believe its money very well spent
Not sure its the right demographic for us tbh yes Elvis is very popular world wide but i doubt he causes many waves in the under 30's market. Personally i think its more about brand recognition world wide and Sunderland might get mentioned more in the media because of the elvis linked shirt!
