New balls,please

Borthwick discussing the state of the balls this season in interview with Marty says that after a number of complaints about their state that a new batch of balls have now been sent to counties by Dukes.
hopefully we may now get a better balance between bat and ball.

Potts in his interview said these balls were soft. That being so they will have to do something about it, it's rediculous having to change them so often. But, the purpose of them was to have a less prominent seam so they produced less movement.

Hopefully they can find a happy medium.

Backs up what I've said that the balls were bought from Poundzone at Wrekenton. Beyond embarrassing from the supplier/manufacturers

FTECB wouldn't have a clue how to find Wrekenton let alone the Poundzone branch.
Don't think the idea of reducing the seam was a bad one but it obviously should have been trialled before being swept out across the championship. The excessively dry spell compounded the issue.

I don't buy the 'bad batch' argument. I think FTECB wanted balls like Kooks this season as they were concerned at the Dukes impact on player development. They probably couldn't use Kooks due to an existing contract with Dukes. So Dukes prepare a ball with a less prominent seam but it harmed the structural integrity of the ball.

Agree but we're arguing semantics - it resulted in a bad batch of balls. Typical FTECB - Well intentioned but badly executed, obviously should have been trialled pre-season.
Hopefully it'll be rectified for the remainder of CC-probably on insistence of Dukes, who'll be very concerned at the adverse publicity, rather than FTECB.

The ‘directive’ from the ECB needs to be ripped up and stuck on the fire.

Stick an order in with Dukes for 1,000 balls from the ‘2021 design’ for every county and lets go back to cricket balls lasting 80 overs rather than 8.

I can handle the balls being replaced more often if it means sticking with the country championship

I like to slaughter ftecb as much as the next man woman man but this doesn't seem like a bad solution for trying to make cc more like internationals and develop players with more appropriate skills

It doesn’t have to be, not should it be an either/or situation ;).

Idealist view imo

I'm of the opinion the cc deserves its place for its own sake not merely as a vehicle for international player development, but that's far from unanimous (probably even contrary) even amongst cricket fans. He purse strings are held by FTECB and whose pretty much only aim is cash generation. That means short form (which is going down franchise route) and internationals.

It's a case of adapt or die I'm afraid. I'm beyond hope of any kind of fan led opposition - if the 16.4 didn't generate any (and it would need huge media backing which it hasn't got) then there will never be any traction.

For Durham to keep existing I see no other option than to keep playing by their rules.

Potts took wickets fine with them like
Comes back to Brandon's point about the way he is bowling compared to the others. He is banging it in harder and faster from a more upright bowling action, whereas Rushy/Raine/Salisbury were using their default 80mph skiddier actions and hoping the seam and wicket did the work. Is this serendipity or did Matty prepare correctly for the new Dukes ball while the others didn't? Rushy and Raine have looked better in the last two games as they've tried to tweak their bowling to match the ball.

Goes to show you what might have happened if Rushy had been picked for an England away tour.

I think it just shows for me what a talent he is and that he’s absolutely suited to test match cricket

People will own

People will moan about the balls and maybe they have a point but it does make those who do well with then stand out out a mile

I also think Carse would have got thete eventually he showed signs 4th innings, he is understandably just very rusty and was often too full or too short

2 cracking talents for Durham

Brexit to blame

From Marty’s Middlesex match notes:

There were also nine stoppages in the game for unscheduled ball changes. The quality of the balls this season is shocking. One only lasted 8.5 overs and it was new. A ball at Leicester lasted two deliveries and another at Kent five. I gather the leather is going soft far too quickly and balls are going out of shape. The ECB held a meeting with the clubs last week and Dukes are meant to be sending a new batch of balls out.

We have been told of issues in the supply chain caused by a number of things, including Brexit,. New red tape linked to that is also having an impact when it comes to importing materials. There’s a suggestion the lack of balls means they are not being stored as long as they need to and this in turn means the leather is not hardening enough. Dukes are yet to comment.
