So the season has started , well sort of!

Two games had play of those only the game between The Academy and Sunderland had any significant action with the young guns almost pulling of a win.

Academy 223 (Clark 43, Thompson 45 Weighell 47)
Sunderland 49 for 7!

Any thoughts on who will do well this year who will find it hard going, any players to watch out for. Does this one game indicate that Sunderland are in for a hard season or is it first week wickets?

The idea is that if you lot want to keep this thread going I will update it each week with stand out results and performances. If there is no banter it will die.

I will do the ame for other leagues as they start up as well.

Here is how the Sunderland Echo saw the first weekend:

Sunderland rescued by the rain as young stars shine
Published on Monday 23 April 2012 12:30

A RAIN-ADDLED opening day to the cricket season saw most NEPL games washed away.

However, the fact that Sunderland’s match against the Academy at the Emirates ICG defied the elements for long periods proved a decidedly mixed blessing for the Wearsiders, who were eventually delighted to see the storm clouds coming to their rescue.

The new drainage system at the Riverside proved its worth, with the Durham youngsters able to take first bite of the batting cherry in a prompt start.

Chris Rushworth and Kieran Waterson then provided a stiff examination of Academy temperaments in bowler-friendly conditions, but for the most part the youngsters proved up to the challenge, with a trio of debutants excelling.

Opener Jack Clark (Benwell Hill) held firm for long periods, easing his way to 43 in 109 balls and when James Thompson (Washington) joined him in a third wicket stand of 86, the Academy were on their way to a decent total.

Thompson eventually fell for 45, a knock that included seven boundaries, but his departure brought the third new boy to the wicket and James Weighell (Stokesley) provided the late innings impetus that set Sunderland a real challenge.

Weighell rattled up three sixes and three fours in a 57-ball top score of 47, sharing in a last wicket stand of 29 with the “daddy” of the team, Academy manager John Windows, that pushed their side up to a score of 223 in 64 overs.

Waterson closed with figures of 4-57 from 18 overs, while Rushworth’s 16-over stint yielded a return of 2-33.

When Sunderland batted, it was literally the calm before the storm.

They eased their way to 15 without loss, but then the roof fell in as Weighell, enjoying the most dramatic of debuts, took out the opening pair in quick succession and opening partner Josh Bousfield ripped through the middle order to leave the visitors in complete disarray on 39-7.

But with defeat seemingly inevitable, the rains came to the rescue, with the Wearsiders on 49-7 after 18 overs, Bousfield robbed of the chance of adding to his impressive figures of 4-20 in nine overs.

The only other game to see a start was at Gosforth, where champions South North did their best to get their game on against last year’s wooden spoonists, Gateshead Fell.

In all, 26 overs were managed, with the Bulls on 60-1 when a cloudburst abruptly ended proceedings for the day.

Sacriston would dearly love to bring the NTSL title home in their final season in the league before taking up their slot in the new NEPL second division in 2013, their determination typified by the fact that their home match against Tynedale was the only one in the top flight to witness any play on Saturday.

And they appeared well on course to steal a march on their other title rivals as Ryan Moralee enjoyed a great start to his summer with a 13-over spell in which he picked up five Tynedale scalps for just 39 runs.

His penetration caused the visitors to slump to 112-7, despite a fluent half-century from skipper Mark Drake, who included six fours and a six in his 52.

However, Richard Byerley and Richard Darling then put on a defiant unbeaten eighth wicket stand of 58 that took their team to respectability on 170-7.

A disastrous start to the home innings then left them tottering on 16-3 after nine torrid overs, David Newton bagging two wickets for just a single run, before rain came to the rescue, a heavy shower driving the players from the field and ending the match.

I thought you played for Washington?!

But I am interested in good crack for all of the leagues so I am happy to start this off for each league and see how it goes.

Will do the Coast League next week.

Of course I was interested in how Thompson and Hickey did for the Academy as well.

Our batting was woeful, although the Academy played well tbf.

However, it can be pointed out that we been unable to have an outdoor net (and quite a few got out to "indoor shots"), and that we are missing our best batsman. Also at 15-0, there was a heavy shower that juiced the surface up nicely for their bowlers.

Great post OT, look forward to a season of reporting at this rate :-). Did you go to any of the games you've reported on? Or was it just a summary based on scorecards and newsaper cuts??

Good work either way.

Will be at most Washington game and then use the papers, but the idea is for you lot to add your own reports in your our league threads as I start them up.

If this is the north east cricket thread then I'll do some reporting on the NEDL.

This week not one game beat the weather and unfortunately north bitchburn have folded for at least this year due to lack of players the guy who runs the club was gutted and i really felt for the guy.

I bet he was it's a crying shame to see that happen as its very rare for clubs to reform. Shows how vital having a youth team is.

Anyone half decent we can poach like??

South North will be gutted that the whipping boys of Gateshead Fell got a draw against them. Also I'll be interested too see how the Academy does this year as they seem to be finally getting to grips with the NEPL. When not at Durham I'll be watching a lot of the NEPL stuff but cant see past either CLS or SN again this year - unless someone knows different.

Anyone know of any departures from SN?

My favourite NEPL ground = either Benwell Hill or Blaydon. Not a lot better than BH, sitting on the bank when the sun is blazing down with a beer in hand.

Just noticed that Chester play SN this coming saturday. Canny way to start the season.

Hewison has left to join Swalwell. Pretty sure that's the only one.

There was a proposal put around last week to reschedule the full fixture list knowing what the weather would be like and South North voted it down, so they can't have been too concerned.

Durham Academy batsman James Thompson survived this appeal for LBW from the Sunderland team during last week's action.

Published on Friday 27 April 2012 08:00

AFTER last week’s virtual washout, clubs will have another go at kick-starting their season on Saturday, although the weather forecast looks ominous once more.

The undoubted game of the day is the clash at Roseworth Terrace between champions South Northumberland and their great rivals, Chester-le-Street.

The two clubs have dominated for almost a decade and the strength of their squads suggest they will be the front-runners again.

South North struggled manfully to try to defeat the elements last weekend, squeezing 26 overs of play when others had given up the ghost, and no doubt every effort will go into giving themselves the best chance of playing against the Cestrians in one of the showpiece league matches in the calendar.

Chester are still carrying injuries, with Gary Scott not likely to appear until early June following a shoulder operation, and Simon Birtwisle also sidelined by a similar problem, although he is expected to be fit within a couple of weeks.

Seventeen-year-old George Harrison is promoted to the senior side after two excellent seasons opening the batting for the seconds. South North are almost at full strength with Jonny Wightman fit again, although they are awaiting news of Paul Coughlin’s availability.

Sunderland are shaken but not stirred after last week’s chastening batting effort against Durham Academy at the Emirates ICG, and they hope to put things right when they hit the road again.

The Ashbrooke men go to Gateshead Fell to take on last year’s bottom club, but they do so without bowler Chris Rushworth, who is away with Durham, and Dan Woolston.

Fell also have absentees with James Lloyd and Stephen Devenport unavailable, but their new overseas signing, Shoaib Khan, has arrived in the country and will make his debut.

The cock-a-hoop Durham Academy bowlers will be tested again this week, the youngsters travelling to Jesmond to take on a Newcastle side who include opening batsman Mark Stoneman, who has just been registered as their Durham player.

Joe Reynolds and Callum Harding will also be making their first appearances, weather permitting. Unsurprisingly, the Academy go with the same 11.

Elsewhere, student James Hill returns to the South Shields line-up for their home game against Blaydon, although visa delays mean their overseas signing probably won’t make it, while Jonny Malkin is included in the Hetton Lyons side who travel to Tynemouth.

On Sunday, the long road to the National Club Cup final begins with first round matches featuring several Premier League teams.

Former winners South North and Chester-le-Street both have home advantage, against new-look Stockton and North Yorkshire outfit Richmondshire respectively.

Sunderland also came out of the hat first and will play Benwell Hill at Ashbrooke, while South Shields visit Blaydon. The new sponsors of the competition are Kingfisher Beer, who have dangled the considerable carrot of £5,000 of prize money for the eventual winners.

I'm told that all training at chester le street has been called off at Chester including tonight due to the pitch being waterlogged. It'll be touch and go whether any games get played there this weekend.

Game at Boldon is also cancelled for sunday and annfield plain pitch is waterlogged so it looks like a lot of pitches remain unplayable.

Not sure which game too go and see therefore tomorrow.

Is there a site that has the regional fixtures? Wouldn't mind going to a game tomorrow and watching the footy in a bar.
