Music for Youngsters: recommendations

My lot have a mixed bag of knowledge...

I have been exposing them to what I would consider the essentials for a good grounding.
So far stuff like... Tenor Saw Ring the Alarm, Sister Nancy Bam Bam, jamiroquai, Portishead, Janis Joplin, Goldfrapp, NWA, Eminem, Stormzy... the whole 70s soul music is being handled by Big Boss my eldest brother.

What would you consider essential listening for early teens of today?
My eldest has the most similar taste to me, in fact he introduces me to new electronic stuff these days. The youngest listens to a load of rubbish like Stormzy and thinks my music is shit (as a youngster should obviously)

Can remember being 13 watching Trainspotting for the first time on film 4 late one night, unreal man being introduced to Lou Reed and then obviously the Velvet Underground for the first time

Getting a taste of New Order, Underworld, Blur, Iggy Pop although I had heard his big songs prior to that.

The youngest likes a bit of electro stuff and weirdly was loving on Pop Muzik by M before going all in on Tyler the Creator

Kids won't listen to what you expose them to, they want to find their own vibe.

The only success I had was getting them into Blondie. Otherwise they're into contemporary stuff.

No punk.... Hang your head in shame girl. I'll give you Ramones, Chelsea, Damned, obv Sex Pistols and clash. If you need me to handle that side of ground zero just call me. I can also handle post punk and 2nd and 3rd wave ska. And the shamefully neglected history of women bands and musicians.
Alphaville and, needless to say really, Depeche Mode.
Hey gorgeous....of to see a Depeche Mode Tribute band in April. Never seen a tribute band before. Long story but supporting friend whose ex might be there. Love myself a bit Depeche Mode tho.

Oh hey I would hang my head in shame but I love punk so they have had all of that from day 1. Including Geno by Dexies and Blondie and even Lady Sovereign who is a bit like punk meets rap and her live performance of Pretty Vacant is a firm favourite on csr journeys.
So all the angry music all the time.

Depeche Mode is a great shout and my brother loved DM so I should make sure they get some of that, also Love Pride by King and Scritti Politti, Japan. Nick Drake and Belle and Sebastian whom I can't cope with but their Dad bloody loved. Had to beg him to stop playing them when I was around.

Have you read the long-running fred on Depeche Mode ? It is wonderfully niche at times but took a turn with the sad news on Fletch, of course. Well worth a read.

How about Crowded House and INXS ?

Will seek it out. Talking about niche, once went to a wonderful Depech Mode bar on a visit to Tallin. Tried to find it again on another trip. Couldn't. Did I dream it?
