The Voice Of Reason

Heaven Branch
Brandon v Anfield Plain

The Plain 131 off 20

Last ball Brandon need 2 to draw 3 to win

Lad hits it for 2 as he completes his second run the ball deflects off him as it is thrown at the stumps.

Brandon lad stops in his crease not willing to win the game as he has deflected the ball away

Other batsman oblivious to the deflection goes for 3 run and is run out

Brandon loss tied game on wicket because of the run out

Which is the controversial bit?

I can only see an unlucky bit

Bad sportsmanship on the other teams part, after your lad clearly upheld the unwritten rule, 'Thou shall not run if a throw deflects off the bat'. IMO the other team should have held the ball next to the stumps and politely requested that your errand batsmen return to the crease

His choice to run and try to nick the win

I think your batsmen did the right and most sporting thing not to go for the third. His partner did what anyone would have done which was go for the third run. I wouldn't have ago at Anfield Plain for taking the bails off as in the heat of battle you don't always see the true picture. However after the captain and other players had assessed what had happened they should have retracted the appeal or at least asked the umpires if they could do so thus resulting in a tied game.

I agree, but (and remember I don't know the people involved Voice of Reason!) I know people who would have tried to wing it and said they weren't running on the deflection because they knew they wouldn't get in or batsmen who would have ran for the third saying they hadn't heard their partner/seen the deflection.
