I met him at the England v Australia t20 a couple of years back and found him to be very pleasant and approachable (unlike Ponting who was an absolute t**t)

Unless being captain has changed him

Have to admit, was extremely skeptical last summer when his best mate Warne was telling all who would listen what a brilliant captain Clarke was as we were beating them in the Ashes, but him and Lehmann have been absolutely brilliant for them.

Sickening isn't it

He was sound when Aus were at Durham for the 2009 ODI but the last time they came he was the only player not to sign autographs for the kids...

However he is a great batsman and skipper

Will be interesting to see how many of these apparent world beaters will be around for the 2015 Ashes. My bet is that Harris, Siddle, Rodgers, Haddin and possibly even Johnson will be gone or on the decline by then. Aus have made a mistake (IMHO) by ignoring the younger players in a bid to arrest the decline that happened from 2010/11 onwards. Yes they have a strong side again, but too many of them are the wrong side of 30

They have blooded Warner, Smith, Marsh, Doohlan, Pattinson, Bird, Agar etc etc

Marsh is is 30 and has played 9 tests in 3 years with an average of 32.86
Agar played 2 tests and has disappeared off the radar
Doolan is 28 and has played 3 tests with an average of 31.00

Warner and Smith I'll give you - both look decent batsmen, although Warner's record is a bit lopsided - his performance in the recent series v SAF & Eng followed a very average run of scores. The type of player he is and the approach he takes means he will just as easily score 0 as he will 100

Bird is 27 and has played 3 tests
Pattinson looks the business but is injury prone and probably the only "youngster" they have blooded

Aye

You win

It really is.

Their turnaround really does show what a massive difference good coaching and captaincy can make to a side.
Agree. We just look like boys compared to them....I am not talking about age either. We looked like terrified kids out there in the winter. I just have no faith that there is enough aggression and balls in the side, setting aside the question of ability. I dont have faith that the new regime(whatever it turns out to be) can instill it either.

If Giles gets the job it will just be yet more confirmation that the ECB is nowt more than an old boy's club.
