If I was a contact of tadpole head, I’d immediately block his number following his shambolic and embarrassing performance on STID. Who’d want to be associated with that?

“Networking” meaning speaking to people?People. They only got the chance to buy the club because Short was one of Methven's clients. Networking is a skill that is hammered into Etonians even more than it in other public schools. The problem with the way it's done there is to treat the "lower orders" as if they were an amorphous blob, which explains a lot of his behaviour, without in way excusing it. Methven (like all OE's is a schmoozer), and sometimes you need that schmooze to get people to talk to you who may otherwise not have. It's all part of the act, but if it gets us the possibility of better sponsorships as we get back to where we need to be .....

Do you have a copy of his filofax or a list of his contacts on your laptop or is this just pure conjecture? This is the type of thing you pull up other posters for but you seem to have no problem posting rubbish like this yourself. If you prefer facts then use them yourself.Genghis Khan has been very unfairly treated by history in general. For his time, he was incredibly enlightened.
I'm not denying your last sentence. I also passed no comment on his effectiveness. The sheer number of his contacts though is a fact.
There's a lot of crap spoken about what I think about him. My view has always been that he's all right as someone to have a chat with over a drink. But I don't trust him as far as I could throw him. I wouldn't be surprised if he thought exactly the same about me.

I like your posts but sometimes you need to reign it in when it comes to Charles. If someone had said something was a fact when we were talking finance for example you be all over them like a pigeon on a pastie.
Doesn’t sound like something high skilled tbh. It's a bit more involved than that. It's also collecting business cards etc, and following up further with people who "interest" you. Being able to do it is more or less essential these days, especially if you're in sales, marketing, PR, or even just trying to get more business for something you run yourself. I hated it myself, but public school people are taught how to converse with people and "work a room" as it's known.
To be fair I don’t think GoM is saying anything different.Doesn’t sound like something high skilled tbh.
It’s an old boys club of nepotism by the elite dressed up as something skilled
Another member of the elite failing upwards. That’s how I see him.I've seen the client lists on his now apparently defunct company. And you can be sure they were just the blue chip ones. I've known more than enough public schoolboys over the years to know how it works. There is an Establishment network which is totally hidden, and Methven is also involved in the Tory party.
As for finance, I only ever came down on someone when they posted something I knew for certain wasn't, usually relating to matter of company law, tax, or accounting standards. I don't see the harm in that.
Unlike a lot of people I don't see their time here in black and white. They did many things wrong, and many things right. I also gave up getting irate about things I can't control ages ago.
Like I said, I don't trust the man as far as I can throw him.
Wigan didn't, Sheff Wed may have done but no-one knows how much Berahino cost. The only certainties are Ipswich and MK Dons and neither are in the playoffs
What an absolute snob you areIt's a bit more involved than that. It's also collecting business cards etc, and following up further with people who "interest" you. What an absolute snob you are
It's not snobbery . That's how business is conducted in England rightly or wrongly . Stereotypical public schoolboys ( the oafish over confident Charlie types not the sensitive fackin poetry types ) are far more likely than the general population to not give a flying fuck about what people think of them. In a networking or sales environment this talent is golddust . The number of times I've been been at corporates and I've thought "I should say hello but I wouldn't want them to think I'm trying to sell to them " . The lads with little self awareness just steam straight in and see what happens. GoM isn't saying they're any better , it's just that their upbringing works for them in that scenario . To further disprove the snobbery charge , the other demographics who are particularly good at introducing themselves to strangers are "barrow boys" and good looking women.![]()
Interesting you should say this I was at a conference 2 weeks ago and without boring you with the details some bloke that has came from the wind rush generation was on talking similarly about what you have mentioned above. He was working on some project with 10 well educated BAME candidates and 10 well educated white candidates that had went to Eton, but all 20 people involved were at the exact same level in an organisation on the exact same salary. When they had to present and go onto network the project the person had to volunteer to do this, and across the 4 teams it was the white Eton candidate that ended up doing this. Anyways his argument was that their educational upbringing had created a confidence in them that they were the elite and not often better than everyone else, and also they were worked during their education where they could play to a room and give all of the corporate talk as well, whether they could talk to the talk or not it was ingrained into them the belief that they could. It’s crazy how it works, but in regards to CM I think this is similar, I don’t think he’s that clever and has a very poor social awareness when he’s not in a corporate environment and I think he’s had a great benefit from his educational rather than actually intellectually and the hard work, and being able to network but I suppose that’s served him well and he’s well of because of this. You can train yourself how to do it. Mrs G used to dread going to corporate events etc because of shyness and low self esteem, but if you watched her work a room now, you'd never know (it's funny what having to promote your own books can do). Blokes like Methven are trained before they're 18. It's not lack of self awareness - the whole education focuses on self-confidence. Even at the direct grant school I went to, it was hammered into you that, intellectually, you were in the top 1-2% (whether that was true or not). The state system has never had the time or inclination to build self-confidence into their pupils, which is a crying shame, because only some people just have it, like my brother. He's a senior army officer who went from Boldon Comp to Durham Uni to Sandhurst. He's equally at home talking to squaddies and generals. I admire his ability to do that enormously. The only reason I went to the school I did was because, basically, the government paid the fees. Direct grant schools were abolished in 1974, and schools were given the choice of becoming comps or going independent. They all went independent.
First thing we were taught in sales training was how to work the room. It wasn't instilled into me at an early age but it's obvious to most of us that some were. I had a mate, recently deceased, who was high up in the Tory party, he went to school with me but we could all see he's been trained to do it.It's a bit more involved than that. It's also collecting business cards etc, and following up further with people who "interest" you. Being able to do it is more or less essential these days, especially if you're in sales, marketing, PR, or even just trying to get more business for something you run yourself. This is a good point. Remember when Miliband got us a £20m deal from an oil company masquerading as an African charity (Invest in Africa). At the time Chelsea were only getting £20m from Samsung and they were competing in the Champions League. That one deal alone meant Miliband had more than paid for himself.People. They only got the chance to buy the club because Short was one of Methven's clients. Networking is a skill that is hammered into Etonians even more than it in other public schools. It doesn’t need to be people in football that listen to him. If he gets us a good sponsorship deal for example, or a good deal with the supplier of the half time pies, or even the transport for the players then he can be a worthwhile member of the club. You think people in football will take any notice of Charlie Metvhen, haway man, comeback into the real world, I have spoken to people who know you, who say you are real nice man.
You are obviously a fairly intelligent guy.
Why do you constantly defend these people.
