What does a cricket ground have to look like ?

It's one of the most iconic sports stadiums in the world.

Been there twice for the Boxing Day test and with 90,000 inside it has some atmosphere (and character).

The views are fantastic and put some of the English grounds to shame.

The catering facilities and general organisation are a lot better than over here.

Even when it's empty it has an aura about it

I haven't been but don't fancy it. Perth and Adelaide have the grass banks which make a cricket ground - easy to congregate etc.

And how well can you see the ball from the top of the top tier?!

Grassy banks make a cricket ground ..... that's a new one on me.

Most of the Aussie grounds are all purpose and are used as much for their capacity as anything else.

The view from the top level isn't too bad at all and is much better than the view you get from level 7 at SportsDirect Arena.

I've tended to view part of a days play from up there - just to get out of the sun.

On all but the first day at the MCG the seating in the lower level is treat as unreserved so it's easy to congregate either with the Barmy Army or away from them - whatever your preference is.

I'm not saying it doesn't do its job but it looks functional and soulless, sorry. I don't think you have to have been to see that it doesn't have the charm of other grounds.

Fair enough, but it does have a charm of it's own - maybe because it's totally enclosed and basically one continuous stand all the way round - a bit like an amphitheatre.

If you get the chance to go there you'd see what I mean.

Unlike the SOL which is partly below ground level, the MCG towers up over the surrounding district (a bit of a sporting quarter of Melbourne) and is a very impressive sight.
 
Never been to the MCG but I went to the SCG loads of times to watch cricket and AFL.The SCG is a great ground. Perfect mix of new and old.

Probably my favourite sporting arena I have been to.

I would love to be in the MCG for the big AFL games.

As much as I'd love to go to the MCG, I just don't feel any cricket ground can ever match up to Lord's. The aura around the place is just magnificent and I would give a hell of a lot to play there. The MCG does look bloody impressive though as a sporting arena, it's just like NCB says, a little bit too clinical.

It doesn't look like most cricket grounds but most don't have a 100,000 capacity either (or even close to it).

One of the great things about cricket grounds is that they come in all shapes and sizes.

I appreciate the beautiful locations of many English grounds, but also find that the MCG has a special atmosphere of it's own. To hear the crack of willow on leather on willow in a huge stadium is something that I will remember about the MCG.

Also most Aussies (Victorians anyway) associate the ground with football, so Wembley is probably a better ground for comparison.
 
OP - I take it you've never been?

There is no way you could loathe it if you had. It's a breathtaking experience as far as stadiums go. Incredible.

Give me Lords or even the SCG any day mind as I love the old pavillions when it comes to Cricket.
 
its an awesome place, with the history and size of it, with good views, does lack the character of other grounds, the waca and adelaide oval are awesome cricket venues

the gabba now theres no hill and its all seating is terrible really, just a mini mcg

Shut the fuck up you idiot. The MCG is second only to Lords for the best ground in the world. Lord's just shades it for me with it's history.

Have you ever been? If you have then you wouldn't be on here slagging it off. The only proper purpose built cricket stadia in the world live in Australia. Both the MCG and the SCG are a cut above.

Fantastic stadium which I had the pleasure of visiting last year. I love everything about it, including the walk up to it across the pedestrian bridge (reminds me of the old Wembley Way for some reason). It definately isn't souless and offers brilliant views from just about everywhere.

Over here in Perth we have the WACA, which is outdated and too small, especially for Ashes games...remember that 1 in 3 of us in Perth is a POM!
 
i was there in 06 it is a fantastic arena,the best ground i have been too other than lords

THIS THIS...can only wholeheartedly agree.
Last Ashes test on Boxing Day was the second best sporting day of my life. The fact that England were were awesome added to the day's enjoyment but the build up, atmosphere, organisation and everything were spot on.
What a wonderful place Melbourne is, and particularly good for sport and organisation and infrastucture. After all it has the Tennis, the Grand Prix, the Melbourne Cup as well as the cricket.
I went to the first two days of the Sydney Test as well. Much as I enjoyed it, the SCG and the atmosphere, it couldn't hold a candle to Melbourne and its awesome cricket ground.

By the way the best sporting day of my life ever was Wembley, May 1973. MCG is up there!
 
Great stadium but not a great cricket ground in my eyes. I much prefer grounds which have grass banking rather than all seated.

Melbourne is a magnificent sporting city (as is Sydney) and that is why I would never complain if the Olympics were held in Australia every time!!
