Used to play for Shildon packed in 7 years ago.
Umpire in the County League now.

Whats all this pyramid system you speak of? How long has it been in existence? What leagues are involved? Its twenty odd years since i last played up there. I played for Silky for a number of years back in the 70's and 80's. The gold old coast league. Fond memories of scoring each teams bogs on how good they were to have a shit in.

The NE Premier League is the top league up here, it's been going for about 12/13 years.

The winners of the Durham Senior League can be promoted into it, if they meet certain criteria ... and wish to apply for promotion. They replace the team who finished bottom.

Below that you have the Durham County League and Durham Coast League who are considered to be on an equal standing. The winners of those leagues can apply to join the Durham Senior League, taking the place of the bottom club.

Last year both league champions, Kimblesworth and Boldon CA, applied to go up and after winning a play off and passing a ground inspection, Kimblesworth replaced Marsden in the DSL.

Then it all kicked off because geographically Marsden are closer to the Coast League, but the play off winners came from the County League and that is were Marsden will be in 2011.

It's not so much a pyramid as a group of leagues that can feed in to one another, but this may change following the fall out from what I've just described.

It looks like the Durham Senior League (in their wisdom) want to form a second division to prevent this kind of thing happening again, but in doing so will draw on clubs from what they consider to be lower leagues and that will ruin what's left of them.

Hope this helps

If they introduce a 2nd division most of the teams will come from the coast league which in affect the north east durham league. Hope it doesn't happen because of a couple of teams complaining. If you go upto the Durham Senior League then you take your chances its as simple as that.

BUT the senior league accepted the proposals for the pyramid system and should be told to fuck off with the 2nd division shite - The leagues have alll agreed to it and so have the teams - they can't agree to it and then complain when it doesn't go their way.

You either have this system or not.

The DSL having a second division will sound a death for the likes of the coast league and in turn the north east durham.

Perfect thanks. Very interesting. I can remember the stir Hetton Lyons caused when they fucked off from the coast league many years ago.

Yes, I remember that well - it was a long drawn out affair.

Hetton Lyons were the most progressive team in the Coast League and had overseas pro's long before most other sides in that league. They had the best ground and a nice bar.

Quite rightly they used to get all (or most) of the representative games until they fell foul of the league committee - in particular the chairman John Lowrey.

From then on it was a game of politics, The Lyons not getting representative games and their players snubbing the league representative sides.

Once it became clear there was a vacancy in the DSL (I think following North Durham's resgnation) Hetton Lyons made it known that they wanted to move to a higher league but first they submitted their resignation from the Coast League, which was the correct way to do it.

Unfortunately for them they didn't get the promised place in the DSL and the Coast League took revenge on them by not allowing them to reclaim their Coast League place.

Fortuantely the got accepted into the County League were they remained until a further DSL vacancy arose when the NEPL was founded.

The PL has ruined local cricket imo, it brought the concept of non pro's getting paid money. When I was playing for Horden seconds in the early to mid 90's I was watching a a lot of local cricket also. Them days only the pro's got paid with one or two exceptions. Nowadays its all about the money and it beggars belief the quality of some of the players getting paid for Horden now when compared to the standard of players pre premier league who were not getting a penny

Did you play when Silky wouldn't declare against Ryhope and it let Houghton win the league

No mate. Must have been after my time. I can't remember Houghton being in the Coast League at the time. I played at Silky all through my school years at Junior level etc, and then a mix of all levels up until about 86-87 when i moved down to London.

The lad who mentions his dad, i know his name but he wasn't at Silky when i was there.

Think me da started playing cricket in about 84 and i'm sure it was at silky, he then went to ryhope from there. He also played at boldon, Murton and Easington in his time!!

been to a league meeting tonight, the Durham Senior League have put a proposal to the Pyramid comittee that they're are trying to start a 2nd division in 2012. Although not said in so many words it was suggested their would be no relegation from the 2nd division thus making the pyramid system worthless. Committee members all voted against it but this has made no difference and DSL will continue as planned. They will be looking to the coast league, tyneside league and county league to acquire teams.

If they go through with this then the DSL are likely to be chucked out of the pyramid system and all clubs joining it will be allienated from the pyramid system too meaning that it will be hard to join other leagues if the DSL goes tits up or if they get the opportunity to come back into the pyramid system they will have to start at the bottom. We all know it only takes a couple of teams to leave to make the league abit of a joke so joining the DSL or staying within it may be a huge risk for clubs.

To fill the void of the DSL within the pyramid system it would be likely that the Premier League will make a Div2

Oh and Marsden went to the ECB to complain about their relegation to the county league and try to get the decision over turned but this failed as the ECB sided with the Pyramid system rules. Apparantley the rules state that normally their is no grounds to appeal a relegation.
