MARK WOOD SIGNS NEW DEAL UNTIL UNTIL 2019

Durham CCC are thrilled to announce England fast bowler Mark Wood has committed to a new three-year contract at Emirates Riverside.

The 26-year-old will ply his trade, at county cricket level, in the North East until at least the end of the 2019 season.

A series of explosive bowling performances fired Durham to the NatWest T20 Blast final this year, one of many times he has set the county scene alight since making his debut in 2011.

Wood also earned a Test central contract with England but is currently side-lined after a recent operation to his left ankle.

Speaking after signing his new deal, Wood was delighted to have secured another deal with his home county.

“I’m delighted to be honest; throughout the year, I was desperate to stay,” he said.

“Three years was one of my main drivers, I wanted to not just stay for one or two, I wanted to make sure I was here to make a difference for a long period of time.

“The recent setback we have had gives us a chance to make a big impact and hopefully along with my England duties, I can push the club forward in a good light.

“I’m a North East lad from the region, I want to make a difference for this club and I’ve been here since I was 16/17 years old so I’m delighted I can stay on longer and continue my Durham journey.”

Chief executive David Harker said: “We’re very pleased to have Mark’s services once again and a three-year deal shows commitment from both parties.

“There was a great willingness from both parties to get a new deal sorted and we are delighted to have got this over the line.

“His potential is vast and we’re glad to be supporting him throughout a time when he will be reaching the prime stages of his career.”

Whilst he is an excellent cricketer and seems a bloody good bloke I'm slightly nervous

Scenario 1 - his injury problems clear and he continues to play for England. Central contract so we don't pay him but he hardly plays for Durham

Scenario 2 - he remains injury prone, he doesn't get a central contract next year and we have a large wage bill for someone who hardly plays

Basically we carry the downside here but no upside.

Or am I wrong?

You're not wrong. Seems like Durham are carrying all the risk for the injuries he keeps picking up for England.

Well the risk was the other way around this last time, he picked up his injury playing for Durham.

I think it's good news. Who knows what will happen as far as his central contract goes next year. If he doesn't get one then we get a great player playing for the team or compensation if he plays occasionally for England.

Injury with him is the question mark of course which I reckon will go one of two ways, 1. he's fine and plays for England, 2. he's not fine and sadly will never be fine and he'll drop out of the game.

But it's a good move overall for Durham and for the individual and exactly the type of person you want playing for the club.

I think England will look after him

I think his injury problems are almost a bonus for us, as it means he will play a lot of cricket for us when coming back form injur

I think a possible scenario is that England decide he is a short form specialist, which will still mean a central contract

I think we have to forget the financial side partly, we don't know quite how the new board will work, but I think the ECB will have been involved in the decision for him to stay.

Love watching him bowl even if he only plays 5 games it's worth it. His spell in the one day game against the yorkies was brilliant

Watching him live last year was one of the real highlights, world class cricketer, I know that sounds over the top, but some of his spells in the 20/20 were better than anyone else in the country.

He's not fine he is within his rights to see out his contract, while being paid like Steve Harmison did.

A video from Mark Wood.....

he says he'll be allowed to bowl again in January and the operation had had took a bone out of his ankle - now I would have though you would need all your bones in your ankle but I'm no expert.

not with the new central contracts, wages will only be covered if you are either test or all formats, i forget which, but either way short form players will not get full contracts which means although they'll get juicy increases to their salary we will still have to pay them their wages, though no doubt FTECB will make demands of when he can and can't play.

as i understand it.
