Ha! I see what you are doing. I always actually thought their was a final (until now):
"Champions England Newcastle United and 10 others" (From wiki).

but because they survived furthest in the UEFA cup they were deemed the winners. They were the only one who survived into the round of 16 and captain Scott Parker received a certificate before the game. I guess there must have been building working going on?

I can remember we turned it down because we'd have to cut our preseason short. I was annoyed at the decision back then and still am. I don't know if you can really count to as playing in Europe or if it's a proper competition. But it was a gateway to the UEFA Cup. More than likely we would have got a team from Estonia or Latvia in the first 2 rounds and a half decent team in the third! It would have been better than playing preseason friendlies.

The year Newcastle lost to Troyes in the Final if we had applied we would have got in. Two years running in 2000 and 2001 we could and should have done it.

Agree that it's better than pre-season games. Worth mentioning that the season we lost to Troyes we ended up finishing 3rd in the league so there was no evidence of 'burnout' as is a common theory against it.

aye a decision I don’t understand and would be pissed off with at the time. Like you say, use the Qualifiers as your per season and barring a disaster you’re in Europe and the fans get to travel and experience it whilst raising the profile of the club. Daft to not take part.

Yep, agreed, the Interoto games were definitely better than pre-season games. I went to Lokeren away and it was a cracking and friendly trip, despite the presence of loads riot police and a I think water cannon - seemed to pass without incident. Warm day, match on a Saturday. I really think pre-season games should be accessible and in Europe where possible. I was over for the Galway Races when Sunderland had a tour over there and always thought a stack of games in Ireland in the summer would be ideal. I know Newcastle have played the odd game over there, against the likes of Shamrock Rovers, but a three-game stretch would be great.

If they had to engrave 'The Inter-potato decorative object winners 2006' around the base they'd need a dustbin sized trophy, probably why they went for the certificate printed on bingo ticket paper.
