March to June 2020 - NEWCASTLE UTD fc

The silver lining of this controversial Newcastle takeover is the raising of the profile of the human rights abuses and other atrocities by Saudi Arabia and MBS.
To human rights groups hoping for change the premier league is the perfect vessel to convey their message. Everything is very visible and criticism of the Saudi Regime can be renewed regularly and attack the concept of sportswashing

The awful thing is it also highlights if you’ve got enough money you can pretty much do what you want. Premier League are happy to welcome with open arms regardless of the type of character you are, all about the money, unfortunately

In my opinion something is very amiss here.

1. This is a terrible time for a country that is pretty much dependant on oil to be flashing cash on vanity projects. Oil is at an all time low

2. Its a terrible time for anyone to be buying a football club. We have few certainties in world football one of which is that high players wages need paying regardless.

Only thing is that this is a good time to sell. I suppose the might be taking a punt that if the bottom drops out of football they are well placed to snap up big names from clubs desperate to sell players? But if premiership football survives as we know it.... they will have to spend huge money to create a Man City as the fans will expect. (Before the mags deny this will happen, Ashley broke your transfer record and it still wasnt enough... you would still rather have ANYONE else)

2. What is the value of these projects for a state investment fund? Do they really think that buying a football club will suddenly change mass opinions of a country?

When Qatar Foundation sponsored Barcelona did many catalans suddenly rush to Qatar? Any of us visit Tanzania or Invest In Africa? Do big companies or influential people change opinions based on a countries investment fund owning a club?

3. Why is Staveley so keen to do business with Ashley when he has snubbed her before? She seems to appear time and time again. After last time, you would think she would take her investors money elsewhere. Again, something is amiss

I agree it looks unlikely, but I suspect (with zero experience or insider knowledge) that this is another Ashley smokescreen.... didnt the contraversial developments near the ground get approved recently?

You have really mulled this one over. There are a lot of questions you raise that will play out.

Que sera sera, whatever will be will be. Let’s see how it plays out. Newcastle is an attractive buy, let us see what they have planned.

Getting worse now. The replies from mags are lifting.

One such response:
As an fan eagerly awaiting this takeover to happen, I must momentarily pause to consider the pain and deep hurt this woman must experience, I feel sincerely sorry for her. To move forward Saudi Arabia must be allowed to engage and correct the wrongs of the past.

Newcastle United actively aiding Saudi Arabia to improve their behaviours and right past wrongs..... We are going to be the Premier Leagues 'Caring Club'. I assume this means we will be everyone's 2nd team again.
Great news. All that money and universally loved. Those of us who have issues with the take-over can rest assured it is for the greater good.

premier league football cluibs are not vanity projects..they are businesses that have a very high replacement cost..huge levels of recurring revenue..and mostly make a profit...the idea of woners buying clubs to treat them as a charity is a myth deployed by some fans,,

The window lickers at Themag showing themselves up again

Just can’t believe someone was actually prepared to admit to writing that, let alone publicising it.

Basically saying please save us from that nasty Mr Ashley who has furloughed staff members (and won’t simply throw his own money into wor club) and let that nice misunderstood man MBS (who may thrown money at us) take over wor club. PS I’m sure he didn’t mean to sanction all those beheadings, murder and dismemberments.

I dont think they're a charity, but many clubs are vastly in debt chasing success.

Im not going to lie, the finances of football make zero sense to me, and Ive been involved in companies for the last 12 years. Every bit of business sense goes out of the window where football is concerned.

QSI (Qatar) bought PSG in 2012 and after the initial flurry of transfer activity and infrastructure investment gave them a contract for a 200 million cash injection every season. That means by the time the Qatar world up drops in 2022 they will have chucked in 2 billion Euros for players in the 10 year period.
I'm not 100% on the figures but i believe they are pretty near the mark.
It doesn't seem value for money to me so don't ask me why they think it's a good idea.
I am in no way saying this is what the Saudi's have planned just really a comment on your question what is the value of these projects for a state investment fund.

This does seem to be the case. There are the odd exception like LFC. I assume the owners would make a profit if they sold. I also recall (i think) a recent article claiming that the owners of City would also see a profit should they sell. That said your point stands for the vast majority. Unless it is beyond my understanding, which is very feasible, a football club is about the worst investment around.

It’s called sportwashing, and some people fall for it.

Man City is in North?

When football sold its soul to big business more than 35 years ago, it severed its origins of and for community. Subsequently there has been a relentless and exponential trajectory towards ever bigger business and feathering of nests. Arms are opened to power and money and that is the nature of business and, arguably, human nature. This Saudi takeover is simply more evidence of this.

This takeover is about sportswashing and improving the image of MBS and the Saudi regime....nothing else. It’s smoke and mirrors. The problem he might have is if the bad press is sustained throughout his tenure at Newcastle, it could have the opposite effect i.e it could highlight the atrocities he’s committed in Saudi Arabia. Newcastle could inadvertently become the spotlight for exposing his tyranny!
Imagine the coverage his critics could achieve getting on the camera of the premier league? Worldwide coverage. It could become the vessel to promote an anti-Saudi narrative rather than promote a positive image.

Aye. The people falling for it will criticise critics of the regime, to help muddy the waters and change the narrative away from what is going on in the country.

It’s already happening in this case.

Here's a story that may cheer up all the seething, bitter dribblers on here contributing to this 230 page thread (and still growing) ......

This reform is a momentous step forward in Saudi Arabia’s human rights agenda, and merely one of many recent reforms in the kingdom

:D

if genuine that’s a great step forward .......but ......its got to be verifiable......may be just appeasement......telling the rest the world what it wants to hear and they’ll continue to do barbaric things away from the world’s attention. Remember theres strict bans on filming of both corporate and capital punishment, because of the outrage it would cause elsewhere. I honestly believe there won’t be reform......just more appeasement to manage the Saudis image to the rest of the world
