Made in Sunderland tifo tonight

I suppose the caveat with Rigg is he joined SAFC while still at primary school so arguably he was 'Made in Sunderland'. Sunderland academy to be precise.

Aye, just think there's better options tbh. Rather see us focus on people in Sunderland beyond sports; plenty people you could throw in there really. Would make having Jill Scott on it make sense since it's about the city rather than the club as she's arguably one of the biggest things to actually come from the city.

Not sure picking someone who could potentially be a mag, as it's still a grey area really, is the best person who's not really done anything.

Nonsense

Well obviously unless you want 100 people on the banner. Again all obvious stuff

Is that official then that Michael Gray is what you say, or are you conflating a young lad with his grown up persona

Rigg a mag? He’s a professional man. His whole life has been this club. Some people take the sectarian thing far to far

It'd argue it's sectarian to try and claim Rigg is Sunderland.

Not everything in the North East is Newcastle or Sunderland.

I use to sit on the first row so probably know the lad that happened too. How’s that happened we’ve launched so many flags up that stand without issue. Didn’t see what happened from my seat in the sec.
Someone should have been directly in front of him so it went over him, instead it got caught under his wheelchair. It all happened in seconds and we were behind the barrier so couldn’t do anything but fair play to the steward who acted quickly or it would have turned nasty.

That’s a nuance I didn’t get, but thanks for the heads up… makes more sense….
Mind Micky Gray should have been on there in terms of service to Sunderland and played for England and actually born in Sunderland
Mickey Gray played in 2 euro qualifiers and a friendly, coming in as a sub in 2 of the 3 games.

Henderson and Pickford have been in the England squad when they have been runner up (twice) in the euros, and been in the semis and quarters at the world cup. Henderson has also lifted a European Cup at club level.

Scott has won the euros and been to the semis of the world cup.

If you are looking for players born in the north east, developed in Sunderland and that hit the highest points of their profession, all three are head and shoulders above Mickey Gray.

If you are looking at best servants of Sunderland AFC at the fist team level, they are all behind him.

Nee Bobby Gurney?

He has seemingly been erased from the club’s collective memory and subsequently it seems that a load of modern supporters have absolutely no idea who he is or what he achieved at the club.

I found it staggering and borderline disgraceful that he was not automatically selected to be on the ‘Legends Way’. The club’s all time record goal scorer, a league winner, an FA Cup winner and Sunderland born and bred. Essentially a one club man also. Most clubs would have a statue or a stand named after him; we didn’t even award him a sodding brick.

No Bede the Venerable.

Disgraceful.

Top local lad, the most famous of them all. Actually buried in Durham Cathedral.

However Iam not aware he was any good at sport unless calligraphy qualifys and he’s never been forgiven for building his church in the middle of shipyards 😜

The David Beckham syndrome….. Carter and Shackleton had star appeal back then and they still hold some resonance today.

Having said that did Charlie Buchan make Legends Way…. He was a super star compared to almost everyone else and he won the league is highest league goal scorer, and played for around 9 years and was the most famous football journalist of all time.

Not everything in the North East is Newcastle or Sunderland.

He’s a lad born on the south of the Tyne, who has spent all of his formative years at the club. Some of his family may well ‘support’ Newcastle… but that’s their pastime. This is Riggs live and he wears the badge with pride and owns it.

For some people to doubt his commitment because some relative supports Newcastle is disingenuous, insulting and frankly childish.

If it had been Glasgow/Celtic it would be bad enough, but to suggest he’s got some forcefield, indoctrination or gene which means he is a passionate Mag is insulting and total nonsense

Tell Newcastle that then. They’ve used Durham Cathedral and Angel of the North on their displays

Aye no arguments, to be fair they get critisised rightfully.

Absolutely nobody is suggesting the second part but that still doesn't mean he isn't a mag at heart. You've just gone and blown something out of epic proportion to fit your narrative.

There's plenty players/managers who have worn their rivals shirt with pride - it's called being a professional ie. Leadbitter at Boro, or Mowbray for us. There's also others like Chopra which less said.

Someone 'made in Sunderland' is someone who was born in Sunderland and has succeeded in life or someone who has moved into the area and has made a career in Sunderland and is a now more a Sunderland lad/lass than anyone born in the city. The likes of O'Nien and Gary Bennett fitting that. Rigg ain't either of those, he might be in 10 years time - he might also be the next Colback. Who knows.

I love Jill, she's a proper ambassador for the city.......however........she's got shite all to do with the Stadium of Light.

Strange post
