LVCC D1 - Surrey v Durham

Personally i thought we would struggle this season, but the start has been outstanding. What has stood out to me is how tough and resilient the side have been. In the last two matches both Notts and Surrey had probably better sides than us and home advantage but both proved a bit flakey when the pressure was on. Colly as the leader must take a lot of credit for this and Benks must still be a big influence in the dressing room.
The big plus for the future is the form of the younger local lads. Stoneman and Borthwick have stepped up and if they maintain their form will be very important to the team. Rushworth is showing he is not a one season wonder. I hope Wood retains his place in the side even if Stokes is fit to bowl in a 4 man pace attack. He is the quickest bowler at the club and his ability to reverse swing the older ball is a huge bonus.

This is right, we aren't really better than anyone else, but we have incredible competitive instinct inspired by colly which will hopefully tip the scales in our favour more often than not. Not many run fests against our attack, so we will get more results than most, be it positive or negative.

We're only a root away from leading the league by a huge margin. Thankfully perfect Peter will never play for yorks again ;-)

I think its a combination of factors:

Not getting hampered by England call ups
Having a captain everyone looks up to and who gets the best out of his players
A continuing conveyor belt of seamers
Youngsers putting their hand up and contributing
A god mix of youth and experience
The confidence from winning games in the second half of last year
Bit of good fortune in playing sides at the right time (ie, Somerset without Pietersen and Surrey without Smith)
The confidence gained from winning that first tight game against Somerset

Me too.

All the so-called knowledgeable cricket journos wrote us off at the start of the season as well so it's nice to prove them all wrong so far.

I don't think the journos where being anti Durham. At the start of the season they probably looked at Durhams squad which looked weak in the batting and spin bowling department.
It looks like because of the amount of all rounders in the side lots of players are chipping in with runs and wickets.
All we need now is Stokes to find some form with the bat and they could be in the mix come September.

I think most of the people who thought Durham would struggle never watch Durham play. They all cited the leaving of Di Venuto, Blackwell and Plunket, and no overseas signing coupled with Harmisons dwindling fitness as reasons for relegation. What they don't seem to realise is that Durham never won a game last season with any of those players in the side, Diva and Blackie were fantastic players and were always going to leave a big hole to fill when they left, but Durham are coping well so far, with everyone chipping in and playing a part in a great start to the season.

It's still early days yet, there's a lot of cricket left to be played and a couple of games either way means league positions change quickly, but so far so good, lets hope it continues.

Or their opinion was wrong?

I never thought Durham would be top after 5 games, I thought Durham would struggle yet I do watch Durham.

We still might struggle. A couple of those wins could easily have turned into losses.

And one that could have been a win

I think we have a competitive edge on most, and are not afraid to try to win.

3-1 on relatively narrow margins now. Sooner or later we'll get an easy win, so for me it's a positive we can win these tight encounters
