Striker
Starts Tuesday. Barely time to blink.

The reports about Bunny (when he did the injury) was that he'd be out for Surrey and Yorkshire - so by that logic he'll be fit for Sussex. We definitely need him like, as good as the youngsters were, Stokes and Wood are likely to miss this one.

Can see Arshad getting a look, in the place of Wood. Onions in for Stokes if fit. Could be a chance for Buckley/Breese too as a spinning option but we'll see.

With Richardson at 8 at Scarborough I think we can afford to just move everyone up one, in the absence of Stokes.

Anyone know when Benkenstein is back?!

Hold onto your hats!

anyone seen Benks around the ground over the past couple of months, or is he back in South Africa. I know someone mentioned on here his family had moved back there before he did his injury.

Sussex will be without Jordan,Wright,Joyce, Machin and,of course, Monty.

Benks is back in South Africa recovering from his shoulder operation.

Huge match again this week with a chance to lead the Championships with 3 matches to go after this one against 3rd placed Sussex.

The win against Yorkshire was costly however with Jamie Harrison and Mark Wood sustaining injuries. We also lose Ben Stokes due to International duties but Graham Onions returns alongside Gareth Breese, Mitch Claydon and Josh Bousfield who has been included in the squad for the first time. REMEMBER 10.30AM Start for September matches!

Lets hope big Mitch is motivated to play for us. He is one of quite a few players Durham have frozen out over the past few years on what appears to be cost cutting rather than cricketing reasons.

don't agree with this, he just wasn't doing the business as well as others in the squad around him - mainly a choice between thorp and mitch.

Josh Bousfield

who? anyone got anything on this lad?[DOUBLEPOST=1378159011][/DOUBLEPOST]edit: article from a year ago

DALE Benkenstein has tipped Josh Bousfield and Usman Arshad to graduate to stardom from Durham’s academy.

The Riversiders are an aging team. Even without their oldest player, 38-year-old Michael Di Venuto, the injured Ian Blackwell or the dropped Callum Thorp, they still had thirty-somethings Benkenstein, Paul Collingwood, and Stephen Harmison in the team which drew with Warwickshire in last week’s County Championship.

Phil Mustard, Graham Onions, Will Smith, Gordon Muchall and Mitchell Claydon turn 30 this year, and one-day specialist Gareth Breese is 36.

The need for fresh blood is obvious. Jamie Harrison, a 21-year-old left-arm fast bowler, came into the side last month and instantly reinvigorated it. And Benkenstein believes there are more to come from an academy which has served England brilliantly since 1996.

“I took a group of bowlers to Potchefstroom in pre-season and two of them were from the academy – Josh Bousfield and Usman Arshad,” Benkenstein commented. “They were unbelievable.

“We trained as hard as you can imagine and they were awesome.

“Josh is going to be such a good cricketer.”

Bradford-born 18-year-old Arshad, known as “Benny”, is a right-handed batsman who bowls right-arm medium pace.

He made a century for Durham’s Academy in his debut season, 2010.

Bousfield, who plays for hometown club Barnard Castle, has been with Durham since under-13 level. He also bats right-handed and bowls right-arm fast medium. He is 17.

Benkenstein, who turned 38 on Saturday, is likely to oversee the start of Bousfield and Arshad’s senior careers. He recently signed a two-year contract extension, but is being groomed to replace Geoff Cook as coach in his retirement.

Thoughts of rebuilding will be put on hold for a while as Durham focus on the Twenty20 Cup, which starts against Yorkshire on Friday.

To win that, limited-overs captain Benkenstein is looking for big contributions from his “middle-aged group”.

“Ben Raine is really starting to play well, and you forget how young Scotty Borthwick (22) and Ben Stokes (21) are,” he said.

“They’ve leapfrogged some of the guys in the middle of their careers.

“But the strength is Stoneman, Smith, Muchall, and the continual improvement of those guys.

“It means the rest have to keep up. Your general success in the season is down to that middle-aged group.”
