Luton - Sunderland 1991 a unique match.

It seems ridiculous to have a relegation year as one of my favourites but that and the third division 87/88 were the most enjoyable for me. Everywhere we went we had a go and with a little bit of luck we'd have stopped up.
Most definitely...loved the Denis Smith era, but it was a shame how it ended with Viv Busby (RIP) getting the bullet to keep him in a job.

Luton's new stadium at Power Court seems to be making painfully slow progress but its is still underway. They increased it's projected capacity to 25K when they were in the Premier League but I have feeling that they may go back to the more modest 17K that was originally announced. If the design allows them the option to increase the capacity if its needed in the future it would be better to wait and see how things go rather than to end up playing games in a new stadium that was half empty.

They are not playing to a sold out Kenilworth Road these days and that only holds 12K. If just the attraction of having a new ground added another 5K to their gate - which is doubtful - they would be very lucky

I've posted this as it was a unique match. Both teams fighting to stay in the top division but Luton had a policy, ID card thing and no away fans. Its important to point out that segegation of fans at games was a thing at this point and also that Luton is a rough place. Well you can just draw your own conclusions as how this panned out, I'm told the main stand which you don't see in the footage had the majority of the fans "that should not have been". I'm posting this mainly for the younger MLFs. Tremendous, any posters there that day?

A good few of us from Billingham went to this one. We were in the end behind the goal.
Can't remember how we managed to get in but we did. Great days..using coaches, transit vans and Luton vans to travel the country lol. I preferred the Luton vans 👌
Some amazing days /weekends out with some amazing loyal Sunderland fans who still go today.

The London Branch football team arranged a match with Luton Supporters Association on the morning of the game and they were able to get us official permission to attend. There was even a letter from Bedfordshire Constabulary, if I remember rightly.

We beat Luton supporters 5-2. Think @CollingwoodFTM may have scored a couple.
🥳🥳

Not the only occasion when we’ve taken over The Kenny. Luton fans are still resentful of how we took over their place when we won the Championship under Keane. 😂🤣

My friends & I drove down and from memory walked round to the ticket office and asked Luton fans going in to purchase for themselves to get a few extra for us. They went in, got them and handed them over to us outside. Others were doing the same and once inside gathered behind the goal.

Right foot, bottom right from a corner. I remember it well. 🤣

I think Malcolm Trimble from the Swiss got loads of tickets by getting his Scandinavian barmaids to register and order them.

Looked like it might keep us up. A huge result.

a lad I knew lived in Leighton Buzzard. He joined the membership and got us tickets. Can’t really remember much to be honest.

A lad called Neil affectionately known as Bedford, a big Sunderland fan sadly no longer with us, he managed to get us loads of tickets. He bought a few memberships leading up to the game.

I thought that's what happened to us lol lol .
Thought I was imagining it lol.
I remember we were very quiet outside the ground as the police were looking for Sunderland fans.
