Luton - Sunderland 1991 a unique match.

I've posted this as it was a unique match. Both teams fighting to stay in the top division but Luton had a policy, ID card thing and no away fans. Its important to point out that segegation of fans at games was a thing at this point and also that Luton is a rough place. Well you can just draw your own conclusions as how this panned out, I'm told the main stand which you don't see in the footage had the majority of the fans "that should not have been". I'm posting this mainly for the younger MLFs. Tremendous, any posters there that day?

Me! Had friends in Luton. There was a canny cluster of us at the front of their ‘cop’ - a 100
Or so. We all went up
For the two
Goals. The winner was right
In front of us. IIRC Marco with a bad hammy came on as a sub wearing leggings and crossed for the winner?

Got a bit spicy at the end
And two other London branchers got deliberately mowed down by a car 😳

That was all at the behest of David Evans MP, Tory of course, and a right wing twat even by the standards of the Thatcher government.
That was him, gingery hair fellow.
Five of us there (one a mag) we all lived in London so got in no bother.
I was tempted, there was coded messages about getting tickets in that fanzine/magazine 'when Saturday Comes' as I remember.

all you could hear were the Sunderland fans, tight group behind the goal looked class when the second went in, great ball by bracewell for the first, bring back those Hummel boiler suits Marco had on warming up, still mad when you see the keep pick it up from a back pass, good to see keepers just launch it, cheers for posting enjoyed watching it, on a beach in Cambodia the sun coming up our lass said what you watching on the phone….luton away from 1990 😀

It's class when you take in all the context, the Luton fans even say bigger numbers than Liverpool and Man Utd who of course had networks. To be fair they also say therir firm stayed away in these times as anticpated no away fans, I find this hard to believe minf. Either way great result and fantastic support against all odds.

Talk about game changers off the bench, Marco and Keiron Brady. In an era of only 2 subs that's some bench.

Also watched towards the end there Armstrong put in a good solid challenge and won the ball but left the bloke on the ground. The ref said fair challenge and the bloke picked himself up and got on with it.
That happens today.
1.. The bloke will be lying there for 3mins crying holding his ankle and possibly tapping it on the ground to show the world how much it hurt, when in fact it simply didn't. We've all played, we know what hurts and what doesn't. Get up you cheating soft cock you're embarrassing yourself, your club and the game itself.
2.. The ref would most probably have reacted to said soft cock's crying and given a free kick and possibly a yellow.
3.. The opposition and most likely it's fans would be screaming for the ball to be kicked out of play so diddums can get some fake attention from a couple of physio's.
4..VAR take a closer look to see if Ref needs to alter his yellow to a red ffs.

I hate modern football and am so grateful to have had at least a decent slice of the real football era before money ruined the game.

Micky H aka McGurk front row on 7mins 9secs!

Me and my brother got in , he borrowed a Luton town membership card from someone he worked with , the card got confiscated but a Sunderland fan who lived in Luton told his son to go and two tickets , all sorted ,

Ginger , was that not Colin moynhan, sports minister, hated football fans ,

Me, a mate who supported Liverpool all over the Country gave us ID cards we could use , I remember metal cage turnstiles and fencing between areas.
A bit of ag at the final whistle but nowt too bad., some scruff tried to heckle a greeny at me through the fencing but managed to hit is own shoulder with it stretching to his mouth.

Don’t remember much of the day tbh, might not have even been this game but it was round that time and defo was ID card job.

Was there in the main stand with my brother , sat a few seats along from Bob Murray he gave us a knowing glance now and again. Was great to see our fans behind the goal when the winner went in

I reckon well over 100 but I was drinking heavily in those days! Luton fans were helping us get in as many disagreed with the ban.

I couldn't go but a couple of my mates were there..they went with the Shields branch and i could clearly see one of my mates (who is git tall)..celebrating in their end when the second goal went in.

Think there was a lot more than 100 in total and this is where Man City's song of we're not really here originated from but not sure if they had anymore there than us.

It was a challenge for football fans to make the game tbh which we duly accepted, got helped by a Luton fan who was against the ban and advertised in one of the fanzines offering tickets, I'm sure it was WMS at the time or possibly When Saturday Comes, but he sorted a lot of people out with tickets and for all visiting clubs.

We were all behind the goal rather than the main stand and can be seen clear as day in the highlights, made a right racket and had a mint day out....absolutely loved that season, was class as a young 'un culminating in the legendary Man City away game.

It seems ridiculous to have a relegation year as one of my favourites but that and the third division 87/88 were the most enjoyable for me. Everywhere we went we had a go and with a little bit of luck we'd have stopped up.

I’ll go along with that. I saw the first German to score in the English top league, beating the fan ban and the madness of Man City away in the final game all in a few weeks. My son was born that season in the December so it was a memorable one for me.
