I do find it strange that O’Nien appears to be held to a different level of accountability compared to most other players. Every single action is hyper-analysed on a microscopic level, and entire narratives built around ‘what if?’ moments.

Everyone we have played in defence makes mistakes, but unless he has the absolute perfect game, then every vaguely questionable decision he makes is an excuse to drop him and label him not good enough, regardless of whether or not it leads to a goal.

I watched the Chelsea highlights on MOTD and Caicedo - a genuinely world class midfielder - was guilty of pissing about on the ball so much close to his own box that he got robbed and it led directly to a goal. Anyone can make mistakes. It shouldn’t mean with O’Nien that whenever he makes one, it’s an excuse for the scrapheap.

After what the lad has done for the club, its time that the hate for him was extinguished.

Trai Hume, who i also love, makes the odd mistake, yet never comes in for the same scrutiny.

I genuinely think people are jealous of the lads attitude

If your hobby is sitting miserably on an online forum twisting about everything under the sun, it’s easy to start hating anyone with ambition and a positive attitude to life.

I love the lad. He could have sulked or pushed for a move when it became clear he was no longer top of the pecking order but his attitude has been brilliant and when he's been given the chance to step up he has, for the most part.

I think the reason a lot of fans scrutinise him more than others is that nagging feeling that he'll do something stupid and get himself sent off and that league 1/Championship shithouse side of him will come out at the worst possible moment.

I'd like to think he's grown as a footballer. He's still a shithouse, but he's a Premier League shithouse.

Don't think the lad would have pulled and pushed for a move, he knows that he has a club for life up here. I can see him retiring and going I to the coaching set up either full squad or under 18s.
To be fair, he will be a sub again next season as I expect us to sign another centre back but he hasn't really done much wrong the games he has played

Yes, but they were given erroneously- because neither Alderete (who was the player the Referee thought had commited the foul) nor O'Nien commited a foul. (I'm guessing this is a whoosh, but it's not always eady to tell when it's about O'Nien).

Go back and take a look at the mags vs Sunderland match day thread, the level of abuse the lad received by a few numpties when the team was announced was bang out of order.

He hasn't surprised everyone though.

Some of us on here were saying he could step up based on the obvious quality of his champo performances.

It's not a surprise to me that he is putting in perfectly solid performances at all.

Killing the haters. Expect him to stay in team for a while. They said he wouldn't play a minute and if he did we'd go down. He's going to end up with about 10 games and we'll be top ten.

Started 3 full games an we won them all.

Hope he keeps his 100% record v Villa.
