Noticed this lad over the past couple of seasons opens the batting and quite often opens the bowling in championship and 50 over cricket.
Very unusual and a big work load. Only player I can think of who did anything similar was Eddie Barlow also for Derby in the 70s.
Can anyone think of any other examples?

He only started bowling a couple of years ago,Lancs reject as an opening batsman. Medium pace dobblers but got 50+ wickets last year so obviously useful.

Aye he is nothing startling with the ball an old fashioned left armer who is a clubby unless it swings.
Was just thinking the way we are batting and watching yesterday I wonder if it's worth giving Ben Raine a chance to open the batting. Technically he looks as secure as anyone and has his bowling to fall back on as well if he doesn't score any.

A few years ago I can remember when Tom Smith of Lancashire was promoted to open the batting while opening the bowling- wasnt quite in Barlow's league mind.

Eddie Barlow floated in the middle order at Derbyshire as John Wright and Bud Hill were the openers.
He would bowl seam up 2nd or3rd change as he was brought in to run the place.
Granted he did the opener job well for SA mind.
