Looking back...our opening 6 Fixtures

1. West Ham ( H ) - When the computers gave us home to the Hammers on opening day I think most of thought we couldnt have hand picked a fixture ourselves.....as so it proved. A really composed and clinical performance but with two highlights for me. One - The fact that Eliza, BDB and Wilson all scored continuing their great end of season form a few months earlier was crucial to their own and the teams confidence going forward. Two - the performances of Xhaka and Alderete...the former didnt disappoint and showed his class immediately....we knew we were in good hands. The latter had us salivating with literally his first touch after coming on and we knew immediately we had a bagged a bargain.
Our crowd of course were also tremendous and while we ourselves said "wow" at the end of the game , the players came off that pitch thinking the same about our support - instant connections were made and this was absolutely crucial in how our season panned out

2. Burnley (A) - Again another fixture we would have looked to get points from, particularly after our opening day win. Regrettably we quickly learned that if we dont take our chances when on top, we will get punished. Seelts last game for us and while his injury was unfortunate his omission from the team was crucial . Post match this result underlined the mantra that we would need to "stay humble" - buzz words for us all season and that attitude again was incredibly important after every match regardless of the result

3. Brentford (H) - Another game for us at home with the real potential to claim all 3 points...and how huge this turned out to be. Not only did we come from behind to win, but we did it by scoring in the last minute continuing the trend from the play offs. Bedlam again at the SOL. Notable also for the penalty save by Roefs ...poor penalty though it was he guessed right and Patterson was being quickly forgotten.

4. Palace (A) - On paper our toughest fixture so far and never an easy place to go. Roefs had a superb game and confirmed we were in his safe hands. Our second clean sheet in 4 games we looked solid and hard to beat which was going to bear well as the season progressed

5. Villa (H) - Although Villa had started poorly we knew we would be in for a tough game. Reinildos petulance made it that much tougher but crucially we found away to equalize and take a point with just 10 men. Another huge result as it preserved our unbeaten start at home and underlined our fighting qualities. This team has tenacity

6. Forest (A) - An indifferent start for Forest coupled with only 1 defeat in 5 for us meant we went to the City ground with confidence growing. To come away with all 3 points ( our first away win ) and another clean sheet was massive....and in truth we never really looked troubled.

We now had 11 points from 6 games and were 5th in the table. We totally had capitilized on these opening fixtures and they laid the foundation of the success that was ultimately to follow.
The win at Chelsea two games later was also monumental in that it our first victory against one of the "big 6", our second away win in 3 matches, but more than that thoroughly deserved. We were flying both on the pitch and in the stands

Thank you supercomputer for those fixtures..... I doubt we will get similar luck this season coming ..but that shouldnt really matter as we know we have a team and manager that can compete at this level

The value of winning instead of just picking up a point. June 19th I'll be hoping for a good chance to start well again. Opening fixture? Home again. Coventry. Yummy.

Don't want to be playing newly promoted teams in the first few weeks, they'll be full of energy and desire.

Someone like Bournemouth, Fulham, Palace at home would be better.

Absolutely....Leeds, Ourselves and Burnley all managed to get a win in the first two games.....crucial for us and Leeds......less so Burnley.....it will be no different this season coming as early wins always are

Hopefully a similar kind fixture list and the buzz of Europe gets us off to a fast start

A minimum of 7 extra games will be a big deal at some point in the season

All very difficult games against fairly established PL sides, with the exception of one.

I remember in the first half against West Ham at points thinking "Jesus, we are miles away here" especially when they had a lovely piece of quick link up play which resulted in a block off the line from a Bowen shot IIRC. That could very, very easily have been us 1-0 down and who knows what impact that would have had on momentum etc.

Ironically, the Burnley away game was by far the easiest on paper and is the only one we lost!

A good start in the league is so important. The confidence it brings, and the momentum it builds can get you well out of the relegation scrap early doors, whilst those below struggle as a gap get bigger.

I hope we can get off to a good start again next season.

Aye I remember in the 1st half thinking chrost when you lose the ball, you can be without possession for a while.

I sometimes wonder if that Burnley defeat was a blessing in disguise. Beating an established Premier League team in the first game gave us a huge confidence boost and showed that we can compete at this level. Then losing to a team who had come up with us reminded us that you've got to work for it.

Absolutely mate...as i ( the OP ) said re that game ensured the need to be humble / take nothing for granted. It was disappointing to lose that game after the flyer we had by beating WHU but a fixture at any newly promoted clubs first home game is never easy

Rode our luck v forest

Easy in hindsight and the same based on this seasons performances for some, but at the time you could have looked at it very differently

West Ham not long off a European trophy and pretty well established PL team

Burnley finished 24 points ahead of us and more recent PL experience than us

Brentford, hipsters choice, great in the transfer market a club a lot of others aim to be

Palace strong at home, FA Cup winners

Villa competing at top end of league the previous season, excellent manager and well established

Forest very good previous season qualified for europe

We were competitive and tough to play against, we deserved everything we got from those games
We have to take every game as important .. no fkn about.. got to be up for them all. That’s crucial. I feel like we did that for the majority of last season.
Totally agree, if you aren’t on it you’ll come unstuck at this level. On their day any team can beat any team in this league

I was about to say similar but not as well articulated as you 👏👏

The fixture list should be arranged on a fairer basis. Teams should be allocated according to their league position this season and split into 5 groups of 4.
Teams would play 1 team from each group, so 1 from the top 5, 1 from 6-10, 1 from 11-15 and 1 from 16-20,
