Interesting too see and hear news on local cricket club ground moves.

First we had Littletown reforming and the ground being put back in use for cricket. Then we had Burnopfield moving to a new ground that they will take up residence in sometime this summer. I'm now hearing on the grapevine that Annfield Plain are looking to move grounds.

Anyone heard anything?

Any other recent ground moves that have come off or ones in the pipeline?

South Shields will be moving to a new ground in the near future, a site that will have room for a cricket field and separate rugby pitches.

I overheard their chairman talking about this the other day but wasnt quite sure if he was meaning SS or another club. The old pavilion as stated was clearly a grand building in its day. The ground now though is a bit of a shambles. It has a poor atmosphere about it. Any idea where they are moving too? Very far away?

Shields are moving to a site that was formally a school, I was told which one but at the moment can't remember.

Swalwell about 20 years ago, that's why they're minted. Could be wrong but did Consett also move grounds?

Burnopfield may have to play their early season games at Maiden Castle or the old ground I hear (although likelihood is new ground will be ok).

Where's Burnopfield new ground and how come they had to move? I once got hit into someone's kitchen there.

There was some initial doubt about the wicket but from what I hear it is now sorted.

Swalwell is a bit of a soulless ground. The junior wickets are about 150 hundred yards from the club house![DOUBLEPOST=1395097226][/DOUBLEPOST]

Its on the edge of the village apparently. They moved because they were offered money from a housing developer and it fit in with their future plans for the club. I am told that the DCB may play one or two games there when everything is setup. I know a bloke well connected at the club and they are all very excited for a new chapter in the clubs history. Hope it all goes well for them.

Swalwell's new ground has fantastic facilities but is a horrible place to play a game of cricket. Absolutely no atmosphere, and to be honest it will be a dog walking field in 10 years anyway if they continue the way they are!

Burnopfield apparently are struggling to make the season in the new ground, mainly due to issues with the developer not coming through on promises over the new field. Still going ahead though and hopefully the delay won't be too long.

The one consistency of both moves however is how lovely both of their old grounds were. It's a shame that money has talked but the way of the world now I suppose.

Morpeth are another side who moved grounds to Longhirst about 25 years ago. Be interesting to see what happens now with the hotel closing.

Its on the Gateshead to Consett road opposite the bottom end of Hobson Golf Club, its a quiet exposed open area but they have sunk the playing area down to try and combat this.
Passed it at the weekend and they were working on the square sat & sun, it look well from the road (green grass) and almost ready but the clubhouse is a good few weeks away from completion yet.
Our first team play their the first week of the season fingers crossed!!

Didn't realise they were moving. Sounds an awful lot like the swalwell move ss others pointed out. Hopefully they get a decent new ground.

plenty memories of a short boundary to the changing rooms/nets where the bank was, being hit into the allotments etc. And plenty stories of the burnopfield basher whacking it over several rows of terraced houses.

Has the old ground gone or still there for the momemt?

I'm no expert, but they're sinking the playing surface to get it out of the wind? Is that not asking for it to flood?

Depends on the drainage, but wouldn't imagine it to be a problem unless the field is already susceptible to flooding - I'd imagine this has been researched - and given the fact it's near the golf course probably not.

And sinking the ground will help with the wind, yes.

Still there. Deal is no houses built til new ground ready so I hear. Was old Swalwell nice like?

I liked it, apart from getting attacked by midgies in the outfield. Was right between the football pitch and the river. Was one of few grounds with changing rooms on the first floor and a balcony up there which was a nice change.

Bit of a suntrap on a nice day and could walk over the road to blaydon rugby clubhouse if you felt like it. IIRC they got something like £500k from the land and then got the new land for nothing.
