anyway, usually after a little thought i can suss out how something has been created but these are bugging the shit out of me, light painters like to keep there new discoveries and tools quite secretive and whatever is capable of making these in no different....so the question is, does anyone have a clue?

i asked one flickr friend and all he said was its in the lines, think about it and you will suss it eventually, been doing my head in all week and just cant get it.

must be done with a wire or something to hold the shape. the gap between trails is perfect, far too close to be done 'freehand'...

clyde u got me thinking here mate. Just realised it can't be wire. The shape would move too much as the light source was moved round. It MUST be on something that is a constant length and shape... i.e. it's got to be on the end of a pole or stick or something.... it's like a crop circle with light :lol:

After some serious thinking I thought some sort of electric fan with lights/glow sticks but after some googling, this may help (not far off my fan idea).....

that device looks superb.... but still doesn't explain the little domes on this post...

there's something in the gap at the top of the domes.. something is there to guide the light source round...

Attach this to a battery operated fan on a stand and bobs your uncle(tutorial link is in the link in my first post a halfway down):

I suppose you could possibly run a strip of lights over the 'wembley arch'

yeah i agree about some kind of dole or something in the middle as there is often a clear bit at the top where no lights are.

i remember when the guy first put pics of that rig online, it isnt made with that but i guess it could well be something similar.

the first link is just an orb tool, similar but its not what makes the domes, i have several orb tools and use them quite often.

ahh the arch thing, close again i think, i was thinking maybe a hula hoop cut in half and lined with LED's but apparently its not that either....thanks for thinking fellas but i dont we have nailed it yet :p

Here's my crazy f***ing ramblings:

I reckon there's a constant central point (a stick in the ground) with a curved light stick/wand on a curved pole (bamboo? Plastic?) attached on some kind of pivot at the top. The light'll flash every half second or whatever to leave the gaps in the lattice dome thing.

Basically ya gan round in a circle both anti clockwise and clockwise with the bendy light pole (oo-err) slightly angled each way to give the criss cross patterns.

Or I could be completely wrong. Probably that bit. Yes, the wrong bit.

Actually, looking at the street one with the green you can make the outline of someone in the dome - sure it couldn't be done freehand? Or with a bit of string attached to torch/arm so the lines of the dome were exactly the same length/trajectory?

definitely agree on the central point bit, not sure on the rest like, who knows? haha

anyway, some more..

the central pivot point is quite obvious in these two pics and the first pic was took in 15 seconds so whatever it is its done quite quckly, so definitely not freehand work.

Going to satisfy our curiosity Clyde or is this stuff 'top secret' in light painting circles? ;)

My hypothesis is it involves string and gravity.

He will of course have to kill you if he tells you.

:-D

No need for PM. You get a colander and put David Vaughan with a pen torch in it
