Lifts that only go up one floor

Is that lift at York Train Station that goes sideways still there or did I imagine it? It was about 40 years ago when I used it (or did I?).
 


I remember the case of the Sunderland Station phantom lift crapper a couple of years back. I believe that after several "Incidents" he was eventually identified by CCTV. I never discovered what his ultimate fate was.
 
Why are they called elevators when they go down as well as up?

Same with escalators.

Escalator - noun
