yeah i was quite surprised but seems a good move. too early for collingwood or benkenstein, less stress for cook but still using him for the kids. guess the gibson thing was bollocks.

Dont want to be a sour puss but under his tutelidge last season we barely got a single win iirc. Results only picked back up when Cook returned.

Only 2 weeks ago Cook was interviewed saying he couldnt wait to get back into things & get benks back from SA to strengthen our middle order for next season....... Hmmmm

thats why i was surprised, all the noise from everyone was things were back how they were and cook will be back. perhaps after more time to reflect, perhaps more tests done it was decided not to push his luck and to take a less stress related job. health comes first.

likewise i don't think benks will come back.

I was talking to someone about this last night.

First of all this is part of the annual review so it could change again in the short term but the Colly/Lewis/Walker combination sounds very pally to me. On saying that though they deserve to be given a chance due to last season's efforts. Secondly I dont think its quite as straight forward as Cook retiring to the youth team. I think he will have a roving role and will still have an input at first team level. However I was pleased for Ally Maiden that he got the second team job and that Jon Windows stays with the Academy. The latter has done an excellent job.

There is now, not surprisingly, a huge emphasis on youth development. A lad I know is at advanced batting classes with the County. His Father told me that there are combined 12 under 12 and under 13 lads on the 6 week course. there are anywhere up to 7 DCB coaches working with them at any one time. This included Geoff Cook watching them. In anyone's books thats a huge resource to be ploughing in to promising kids but as we saw last season if just 2 or 3 of them come through to play for the first team then if 2 or 3 others come through from the U14's etc. you have another conveyor belt of talent. Also the 12 I mentioned didnt include the public school kids.

To be honest I think Colly pretty much does as he pleases down there these days, not that that is a b ad thing. He pretty much took sole responsibility for selection last year so I think Lewis and Walker will be there to do the running around organising warm ups, nets etc.
