Joey Barton has insisted he would be happy to stay at Newcastle United and help the club return to the Premier League.

Reports have suggested the midfielder is likely to leave the Championship side following a bust-up with interim manager Alan Shearer.

Blackburn Rovers are said to be interested in his services, but Barton is eager to remain on Tyneside.

He told The Chronicle: "I don't know what is going to happen with the club or with the manager situation.

"I'm just looking forward to going back and my intention is to stay at the club and help Newcastle back into the Premier League.

"If Alan Shearer takes the job and if he doesn't want me then my hands are tied. All I can do is try and get as fit as possible, but I have got to prepare for all eventualities

Why wouldn't he be happy to stay on Tyneside? £67,000 a week and nobody including Blackburn Rovers would touch him with a barge pole!!

I read that and my favourite quote is in bold. Fantastic euphemism.
