Far be it for me to defend that lot but they weren't invited to the Fairs Cup, they qualified through the League because there was a one club from one city rule which meant teams above them didn't qualify. For instance there could only be one team from London which probably ruled a couple of them out.
The Fairs Cup wasn't run by UEFA but if you look on Wikipedia at the competition of 1968-69 you will see it was the same as the other European competitions. To be fair, if we'd won it we'd be claiming to have won a European trophy.
The UEFA Cup replaced the Fairs Cup in 1971 and the first final was between Tottenham and Wolves.

So how high or low did the scum finish in the league to qualify for this "competition"? Did the FA bring in the "Fair Play" thing to accommodate them or was it that they felt that they had to have some kind of link to put the scummers into Europe - i.e. Fairs Cup/Fair play - it's a conspiracy I tell yer! :)
